Do any of you have to keep the door to the room you are in shut while doing anything? When I watch TV, I have to keep the door shut, when working, when doing anything really. This may have something to do with wanting to block out noise, but I do it even when I'm alone in the house. Any thoughts? :)

Couldn't agree more. I'm an incessant door-shutter.

I like the door shut as I find it quite difficult filtering out background noises. If it were up to me I would probably fit self-closing hinges to the doors in my house. The house would probably have a bit more of a shopping mall feel to it but I wouldn't mind.

Not really for me... I like open doors, and being able to hear or see what all is going on around me. I shut the bathroom door, but none others as a rule. Maybe it's habit formed by surroundings (farm life), more than anything else in my case. I also don't close window blinds... In fact we don't even have any window coverings except in the bedrooms. Car keys are usually in the ignition, unless the vehicle has a loud buzzer for "key-left-in-ignition", in which case I pull them out and put them on the dash above the steering wheel.

I don't lock any doors when we're home, or not. The only time I lock the house, is if we leave town. Otherwise it's too much hassle. I also don't lock car doors when I'm driving, or even parked at home; only in public parking lots. I guess I hate poking around for keys every time I want to go someplace or come home. We don't have any valuables or more than a few dollars in cash, and we don't have jewelry, so not too much worry about burglars. There hasn't been a burglary (at least none whereby the burglar got away alive) in this area in 20 years. We all know each other in this area, and it's a privately-owned road. Anyone not belonging is noticed and often followed, in case they need "help" in finding who they're here to see, or help to find the way out

I would like to have my room doors closed all the time, I just don't do this so it's not rude to my wife. But I have to have all shades down in all windows all the time. This is a constant battle with my wife.

I can't work, play, I can't do anything if the door is open.

Yes. When I was younger and lived with my parents it drove my mother crazy as she prefers having doors open.

It's not really to do with noise, although maybe draughts a bit. I just can't stand doors being open around me, and that includes cupboard and wardrobe doors and drawers as well.

I remember when I was still living with my parents & brother (when I was under 18 ) I was an incessant door shutter especially of the living room doors (there were two) when I was trying to watch something on TV (which was a lot of a the time because it was a way to avoid interacting). If someone came in or left the room and didn't immediately shut the door I would get up in a huff and shut it. My brother used to leave the doors open on purpose to annoy me ... and would find it quite amusing, I think, when I started crying with frustration over such a "ridiculous little issue".

These days, in my own home anyway, I'm not so fussed about the doors as I have more control over the whole environment. It's just my husband and me, and I have my own "quiet room" at the back of the house away from everything where I can go and close the door if things are too much for me.

Yes! I always thought it was just my inner teenager. Even as a little kid, it always made me nervous to try and do something with the door open. My parents would insist I leave the door open when we just put in a new air conditioner or something, and cool air needed to circulate throughout the house, I couldn't concentrate on anything.

I've always liked having the door closed. I never liked it open for some reason. It always felt so awkward.

Ugh, happens a lot, especially when I need some time on my own. A closed door creates a closed space where I can be alone not disturbed by anyone. Needless to say that for many people that's almost like an invitation to come in and check what's going on.

Nope, people always yell at me for leaving doors open, but I like it.

It looks like we're among the few.... I get claustrophobic with house doors shut; no matter the room size. The only thing I will say, is that I don't leave hotel room doors ajar or open. Fire hazard and significant risk of a mistaken guest barging into the room by mistake.

When I was a child I liked keeping the door open a crack because I was quite keen on eavesdropping on my parents. As a teenager I always wanted the door shut, to keep my mum out (as someone else pointed out that merely served as an invitation to her to come in to check up on me). Now as an adult and with my own home I love having all the doors open. It's just the two of us, as another poster said, so it's mostly pretty quiet - great!

Absolutely. I guess my mom assumed that I always shut it because I was doing something that I wasn't supposed to be, so I came home from high school one day to find her with a screwdriver taking my door off its hinges! I was horrified. I ended up hanging a sheet over the doorway because I couldn't deal with the lack of privacy.
