I can't recall the specific thread, the one where people list jobs that aspies should never take, but Im going to prove it wrong!

Today I became the store manager of a local conveniece store! The district manager has been pushing me to take the position for about a year now. Back in August I was formally offered the job, which I turned down. I felt I was not ready for the responsibility and doubted my abilities to manage the store. I thought about it and prayed about it, and came to the realization that they will not keep offering me this job forever, and I really don't know how I would do until I tried it.

My most recent boss, up until last Friday, was caught commiting credit card fraud. The manager of another store and the DM, plus a police Sergent were at the store this morning when he showed up. They asked him what was going on, he denied all knowledge and wrongdoing. He was taken to the police station for further questioning. We got a call less than an hour later that he had confessed to everything. The keys and combinations were handed to me, and the other manager helped me through three days of paperwork that had backed up.

Wish me luck!

Good luck, it is daunting when you suddenly get handed the keys and safe combination but there is only one way to find out if you are suited for the position really, it tends to be those that do not want power who are really best for it as they are less likely to have it corrupt them :)

I am a supervisor in a dedicated charity bookshop in Blackburn and even though I find it hard to ask people to do something I know my boss trusts me to look after the day to day running and I think this is why the boss wants you, he must feel that you are trustworthy and wants to give you some responsibility :)

The boss has also asked me about the technical side of setting up a website, something that she knows I am into so I would consider it as much for this than anything, people tend to listen to the manager more than they would a shelf filler in any aspect of life.

You can always request management training :)

Cnongrats! A big accomplishment not only to be offered the job, but to overcome the mental doubts and accept it.

Awesome, good luck. I was a store manger of a local grocery store for a couple years and its totally possible. Only thing I never liked was I could never finish anything I was doing which really bothered me. Always getting called to the front, ugh.

Best wishes mate.

No, I never said a word. Given the nature of the work I doubt they would have given me the job.

(Dont say "but thats illegal!", there are a thousand ways to get around that)

Congratulations. All the best.

One of the things that inhibits my desire for employment is the fear that I would never be able to get off the bottom rung. Your example is an inspiration to us all.

I completely get your drift.

But it may at some point be relevant. It's one of those things that doesn't matter until it does.

I am autistic yet my brother is a store manager of a chain drugstore. He is doing a great job and is rewarded well for running a profitable store. He shows a lot of the common side-symptoms of autism, including alexithymia, very limited social chatting, possibly no friends.

Just focus on the things you are in charge of:
1. Keeping the customers happy--help them succeed in finding what they need (having a store that is pleasant to visit, convenient, quick, stocked, etc.).
2. Keeping the good employees happy--help them succeed (knowing what to do, gradually improving, acknowledged and rewarded for their contributions).
3. Keeping the district manager happy--help him/her succeed (meet business goals of(revenue, profit, etc.).

I think a mild autism spectrum person is the perfect person for the job.

And, unless you seriously require some special accommodation, I don't see how personal physical and mental peculiarities are required to be pointed out. Most advice I have seen says not to point it out--unless you need your work assignment changed from those usually required.

So, good luck in the new job. May you be well satisfied in the job.
