Do you KNOW when you are stimming or do you realize it upon someone saying, "Hey, what the heck are you doing?!" If you DO realize it? What triggers it?

For me it's when I'm anxious. Never put me in a rocking chair because you will become annoyed.

Let's put you in a rocking chair and set it to music! What tune do you enjoy? When I'm anxious, I get a dancing leg.

i mostly stim when i'm anxious or uncomfortable, and those i kow i'm doing, but i also stim if i'm trying to concentrate on something, and that is one i dont know of, not while doing it anyway...

I do when I am nervous or anxious or upset and I pace and do complex arm movements and the other day a coworker told me to stop doing that and someone noticed I guess because they said something-I also rock and shake my legs too.

I don't know if this is stimming or not but when I was a kid if too many people started talking to me at once or if I was trying to talk and I would get distracted by too much movement I would close my arms and flap my hands wildly. My parents called it 'jump starting my brain' and I got teased a bit for it. I never realized I was doing it until after I was done and people were looking at me. Now I don't do it unless I'm by myself (or in front of my husband.)

That would be fun, and in not use to that while stimming. I'll be conditioned to stim while happy too! That wouldn't be so good... :)

Oooo the dancing leg... That usually happens to me while sitting in a classroom surrounded by people and a boring professor.

I used to jump up and down and flap my hands as a kid and I was made very aware of that by other kids, so I learnt to tone it down a bit. I didn't know it was called stimming until recently. knowing that other people do it makes me feel a bit better about it.

I know when I am stimming, because I am always stimming. I stim by default, so my stimming is not anxiety-related. It's hard to imagine what it's like not to stim all the time.

Most of the time I'm conscious of actively doing it.

Most of the time I realize I'm doing it after a minute or two.

Some stims I notice that am doing an know why, others I have no idea that I'm doing unless someone points them out to me.

At least, I think I only rock when am getting overwhelmed (not necessarily anxious though). I tend to know that I'm doing so.

I've got both stims and tics. The majority of stims I do notice. I just feel so unwell if I don't stim that I sort of have to. The tics on the other hand I don't always notice unless they are really loud or complex.

I realize when I'm doing some things almost immediately (picking at my cuticles, skin etc), but didn't realize I rocked or flapped my hands until I forced myself to think about it and I do it all the time. When I'm thinking on my feet I usually flick my fingers...mostly what I do is hard to notice but I have a mean bouncy-leg, and when I stand it turns to rocking on/off my tiptoes. I really want to know how my parents watched me as a child and didn't go, "Hm. She's listened to that Teddy Ruxpin tape about sixty times now. That's probably not normal. Also, let's get this kid in a ballet class."

It takes some time to notice it then I have the choice to stop or continue. Since moving I've lost my hand shaking stim which is unfortunate because that really helped calm me down.
