Does the term 'food porn' have some basis in reality?

As title.

The reason why I think this is that so many times people talk of 'mouth-watering' foods and the like that they really want to get down their gullet. And food programmes are conspicuously popular, even amongst those self-same people that openly scorn amateur food photographers.

And there was an episode of South Park based on this very subject.

I could just eat a sandwich right now. Oh...

(starts fapping)

I get really excited when I think about chicken stirred in with Lipton Noodles & Sauce.

I don't really get excited over food, but I've observed others acting as if they were close to orgasm.

This thread is actually making me hungry, because it's making me think about the Food Network. Not to mention all the goodies that are in my fridge right now... Ooh, that pumpkin spice cheesecake is calling to me...

The M&S adverts make me want to hump my TV.

i can not relate to what you call food porn, i dont understand that association and it doesnt make any sense to me.

id rather say i can find pleasure in a lot of completely different fields such as sex, knowledge, music, math, and well yes, food is one of them. my mental library of smells and flavours is as big as my mental library of tunes and songs and i just love eating, cooking and tasting new weird fruits or spices or flavourcombinations.

too sweet drives me crazy and i dont like that, but i like all kinds of moderately sweet things, mainly chocolates, cakes, desserts. sour drives me crazy too but it is fun, i enjoy eating lemons and such, also pineapples but thats a bit too much sometimes. i like almost everything thats salty and umami, i love bitter especially in teas and i cant stand hot things at all but im a great fan of chili, wasabi and so on allthough thats rather a fascination with pain than a fascination with food (allyisothiocyanatementhol and capsaicin are amazing drugs, menthol too, basically every substance screwing with temperaturereceptors, i just love it). i like cinnamon a lot and ketchup and broccoli and tortillachips and pears and 70%+ cocoa chocolate. im probably the only person finding plain salad to taste exciting but i dont mind as long as i have some left.

i am a purely hedonistic person allthough maybe not in the way that term is conventionally understood since reading a book can be complete fulfillment to me.

Because it's a visual representation of something that many people really, really enjoy doing. People like looking at good food just the same as men like looking at a decent pair of tits.

Thank you Tequila, I'll bear that in mind! Thank goodness you're not picky. It would be a shame if men had to look at (insert opposite of decent), er, breasts.

Back to, er, topic, food porn is an interesting term. The word formation pattern x plus porn is productive, for example people talk about poverty porn regarding programmes that feature uneducated people being induced by tv producers to have their lives exposed for middle class entertainment.

So I wouldn't be inclined to take the word porn too literally in the food context. Unless it's Nigella Lawson licking a spoon.
