Hi all - can I get some input from everyone on thoughts of cyber schooling? My son is in 3rd grade now, great in math, not great in reading comprehension/ writing essay/doing ok, with a few issues now and then, but I'm looking towards the delight of middle school!! !! !
Everyone talks about the "socialization" he would miss, but most stuff I see that goes on in school is negative. Going on 4 years in public school, and Joey does not have one close friend, has NEVER been invited to another boy's home to play, or a birthday party. (we hold HUGE pool parties every summer and invite ALL classmates, and a smaller bday party where we invite 10 or so. Most of the invited come.) He is the sweetest, most loving boy, and often gets taken advantage of and is the brunt of jokes. Sorry for the rant...

The middle school years were horrific for me - if such a thing as cyber schooling had been feasible in the 1980s I would have accepted it gratefully. Most middle schoolers are vile to each other. The only thing I would say is that without it I may not have developed a 'skin' to enable me to brush off the comments of others - thanks to the constant bullying by the time I left middle school I no longer cared what anyone thought and was content to be me. A bitter lesson but one which I feel was useful to me in terms of coping with rejection and being thought weird - I'm not recommending it by the way, but I am stronger for having weathered it if not exactly happier. :?

Good luck whatever you decide to do. :)

As much as I hated school and got bullied or bitched at, it's done alot for my socialisation. It helped me learn to socialise and interact with people more.

I had the option of homeschool and chose against it because I wanted to learn about socialising.

I wouldn't be atthe stage i'm at today if I had not been in school.. I've put up with alot more s**t than i'd have to otherwise but i've come out better off for it.

(I finished highschool 2 years ago).

I choose real school, I didn't like it very much, but I'd still choose it.

Public relations is JUST if not MORE important than the subjects/courses/papers.

Though I harbor no great love of skewl, I would probably choose to go through normal school again so that I could correct the mistakes that I made the first time around.

I absolutely agree with you, hale_bopp. If I didn't put up with social hell when I was in middle school, I would be completely socially inept (instead of just partially socially inept). As the saying goes, what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.

That is one reason I am for regular school instead of homeschooling. There are important skills learned in school that don't involve textbooks. I know a lot of homeschooled kids (who are NT) who don't have very good social skills (ex. speaking out of turn etc.). I don't think this applies to all homeschooled kids, and, of course, every situation is different.

Back when I was in homeschooling, at least half of "the group" was vegetarian. I guess every HS circle has its quirks.
