Anybody else like punk rock besides me? and no, I'm not talking about the fake pop s**t like good charolette, simple plan, blink 182 ect... I'm talking bands like Rancid, NoFX, The Unseen, The Bouncing Souls, Anti-Flag and the old stuff like the Sex Pistols, The Exploited, the Adicts, The Dead Kennedys and others.

I love old punk, even realy old stuff like Iggy and the Stooges. I grew up on stuff like the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, PIL, Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies, plus alot of "new wave" ( not the bubble-gum-pop new wave, but the real stuff).

I don't really care whether something is "proper" punk or not. I like the Sex Pistols and The Clash (both 'manufactured' bands to a certain extent, don't forget), Green Day, Compulsion, 30 Amp Fuse, late Redd Kross (their early albums were rubbish, but then they were only about 12 years old at the time), the Vandals, some Dead Kennedys stuff, Killing Joke...

In general I prefer bands with something interesting to say, rather than those who are just abusive for the sake of it. The Sex Pistols were a cartoon punk act, but I forgive them because "God Save The Queen" was such a necessary political statement.

I like The Pixies, Nirvana, Faith No More and Rage Against the Machine for speaking out against the norm, too (though Audioslave are an embarrassment).

I know the "real punk" people won't like my tastes, but I really don't care.

imho only TRUE punk bands are the Ramones, the Clash and the sex pistols and a few other lesser known bands because they were formed as a DIRECT protest against the stones and other bands of the late 60s/erly 70s that were becoming less outspoken and more 'PC'. NOFX carry on the punk tradition but they cannot be called true punk as they were formed after the original punk movement, by the time they started, there were POST-punk bands, therfore if a band is formed in this period it cant be punk, only a good imitation of

Punk rock became a consumer commodity as soon as grunge hit the mainstream, I remember this well, I was just coming out of childhood... Prolly has to do with the fact that punk engendered grunge, so to speak. Set the stage for it, in more rock n' roll terms (hehehe)...

But the fact is, the basic ideology morphed from "F#@% everybody, including myself, and f%@# the mainstream, especially...!" to "F#@% everybody, including myself, and f%@# it if the mainstream wants in on this!" I grieved for the "original" punk spirit for awhile, but soon came to the inevitable conclusion that nothing considered cultural (i.e.: music, art, film...) remains unchanged. If it did, the never would have BEEN any punk rock to begin with.

This is not to say that bands like Green Day, NOFX, etc... are no good. Well, *I* like them. Even if they're not as "authentically" punk as the Pistols or the Clash or the Ramones or the Stooges... To sum up my thoughts on the subject, though, I'll have to quote Billy Joel (who's pretty punk rock himself, actually, if ya ask me... ):

One point that I would like to make about being a punk teenager during the late 70's-early 80's is that I used my "punkiness" as a sheild to keep others away from me, physicaly and emotionaly. I went from being the little girl with her nose in a book to that punk chick standing on the corner with the purple mohawk. I came from a fairly rural area and back then being different was not cool at all. The sight of a punker was downright scary to most people.

So, for me, the thought of all of those original punk bands brings back a flood of great memories. The post-punk bands just can't do that for me. It's not that I don't like them, I just don't have the same kind of attachment to them.

I have been into punk music since 1981. The first show that I went to was in July '81 featuring Slow Children and Pastiche, who were both top rated Boston bands at the time.

I have also seen Tre Cool of Green Day open up for Attitude Adjustment,Vicious Circle ( Victoria Qld, AUS.) and MDC when he was in his original band, hung out with Will Shatter of Flipper, as well as GG Allin, and ran PA for The Queers when they were another unknown punk band from New Hampshire playing for 5 drunks in a dive bar.

I like Sex Pistols, The Clash. That's it. I don't have much of a wide range in Punk Rock music. Unless you can call The Jam, Stiff Little Fingers, & The Damned Punk Rock as well.

The Jam were New Romantics or Mods or something im not sure, but not punk. great band regardless though
