Man, these drive me nuts.

Room mate just asks: "have you seen J or K?" (the other room mates)

I'm totally flustered for a minute. Of course I have seen them before. I live with them. "Define time range" I tell him awkwardly.

"Ummm....recently?" he says.

That doesn't help. Another pause. How long ago was recent for him? "Ummm, last I saw J was maybe 3 hrs ago. K before that."

Urgh. Why can he not ask direct question, like "when was last time you saw J or K?" that, I could answer without thinking about,.

While the first few times may be confusing at first. It would be safe to assume that when you are asked if you have seen J or K that he pretty much means "recently" or "how long ago."

I find that some knowledge of this nature is lost "in the moment." So knowing is not always a cure.

Yes, I could see that happening. It happens to me every now and then if I were to be asked a seemingly random question that I would not expect to be asked at the time - only focusing on the exact words used at the time.

Yeah, like that. In an abstract sense, I know what he's asking. But I'm painfully aware of how I am faced with so many potential questions that I stumble, hard, before I can answer.

This happens to me as well. Normal people don't seem to understand that even if I understand what they're saying, I sometimes a need a moment or two to process it.

Sounds exactly like Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory.

Not that I want to derail the thread with that debate. 8)

"Last time I saw him was this morning when he left."

That's how I usually answer it but most of the times I say "no" because I haven't seen the person lately even though I may have saw him when I first came into work. Then I sometimes say "I don't know" which sounds stupid but things don't always come out right.

Oh, that's a good idea. Maybe I can train myself to give oblique answers to oblique questions.

Q: "Have You seen J or K?"
A: "I saw them before they left."

It might even be mistaken for wit, which would buy me some time to get stuff sorted out in my head.

I do the "I don't know" answer a lot too, LG

I answer confusing questions honestly, often with "I don't know what that means." I don't let people give me problems.

Your conversation could've been easily shortened to...

"have you seen J or K?"

"Ummm, last I saw J was maybe 3 hrs ago. K before that."

I've been doing that to my mother a lot lately, now that she knows about asperger's, I figured hey, why not. As a result, she has started speaking very slowly to me. I think I might revert back to pretending I understand everything.....
