fave voices-
*lee marvin- a whiskey and tobacco-infused basso growl, with attitude. he sang "wandrin' star" in "paint your wagon."
*ross mitchell- on the "Coast to Coast" radio program, his basso profundo rumble introduces the nightly show in an inimitably sepulchral style.
*james earl jones- his sonorous bass voice is authoritative yet quirky. the voice of doom, darth vader.
*thurl ravenscroft- a versatile bass with a passable singing voice, the voice of disney as well as of god's right-hand man.
*j.d. sumner, one of a handful of contrabass human voices, who can sing down low all the way down to C0 [32 cycles per second], he is in the guinness book of world records for having sung the lowest note in a pop song, elvis presley's "way down" [aptly named!]. for many years he sang bass for elvis. a marvelously deep, treacly voice he had. he will be missed. the voice of god himself.
*ted cassidy, "lurch" on the adams family tv program. a former tv newscaster/reporter/disc jockey/station announcer, your standard professional announcer's basso, but with a special color.
*marlo thomas- a contralto female voice, distinctively baritone in quality but still feminine in a grand-maternal way- rich as maple syrup, and kindly.
*barbara budd, longtime contralto CBC radio personality, a feminine voice but deeper than many men's voices, certainly distinctive upon first listening. she has retired from the CBC radio program "as it happens," which she hosted for many years.
*frances farmer - a woefully underutilized and temperamental actress, with a distinctive contralto voice with a distant quality rather like a tenor horn, truly multitalented.
audrey hepburn- a warm alto, very easy on the ears, very kind and reassuring lullabye-like manner of speaking.
there are others but i can't bring them into mind at the moment. you can tell i am partial to lower-pitched voices.
