I agree with the being looked upon as stupid description. When someone asks me a question on the spot and they expect an answer right away, it really bothers me. They tell me that I don't know what I'm talking about because my mind can only pull fourth so much information at one time - however, if I was able to sit down and write them a letter in response, my thoughts would be more clear and I'd be able to pull fourth more information.

It's amazing what can happen when Autistic kids have access to an environment of folks who at least try to understand, then at least come to some level of understanding (many try and fail miserably), of what the real differences are between us and others.

When the approaches are all wrong due to either a total lack of awareness that Autism is playing a role, or due to a lack of understanding of what Autism really is and means for us, those approaches (techniques, methods), can waste so much time and even cause damage.

It's always good to read about someone like you for whom some things are working out well. :D

Hi there.....

Thanks for sharing with us through the LA Times article. I was not diagnosed until I was 40 in 2007. I am glad to hear that even though you faced a lot growing up and such, that you were able to get yourself published. No small feat in that.

Scott
