glam rock
glam rock:
trash art. this is but one of the contradictory terms you can assign to glam rock. it's at the same time manly arena rock, boasting about how many notches you've got on your belt and how badass you are... and at the same prancing around in tight silver pants, eyeliner, and long, outlandish hairstyles. so many lyrics about women and desire for women, and yet every now and then you'll find some sorta double entendre about same sex desire or ambiguous sorta gender identity. on one hand, you can have oversexualized braggadocio going on, and on the other hand, you can start branching off into quasi prog elves and dwarves sorta epic lyrics about faraway lands and unreal things. the funniest thing about it perhaps is that so many fans of glam rock are decidedly homophobic. yes, it's fulla contradictions, and perhaps fulla s**t.
i almost don't wanna write in appreciation of these qualities of glam rock, because it seems to me that there's a flood of literary studies done on gender and all that sort of stuff and i almost wish people would ease off and write on other topics for a change. i mean, not EVERYTHING is about gender. but the magic thing about this kinda topic is it's not just limited to academic circles.. glam rock is trashy pop culture at the same time that it has its leanings to "great art" or stuff of that ilk. so i like that it sorta leaves its trace upon the minds of the hordes of people who otherwise profess to abhor anything that departs from traditional masculinity.
anyway. just a random thought. hope i'm not just talking to myself.. but apologies if i am.
