Last semester (Fall) I had a meltdown almost weekly in my Spanish 1 class. WELL! I barely passed with a C and IMO barely understood it ANYWAYS! WELL! I have to take BOTH Spanish 1 AND 2 so this Spring (starting in 2 weeks) I'm starting Spanish 2 WHEN I BARELY UNDERSTOOD SPANISH 1!! ! There's just so much material covered it's hard to understand! I've tried asked for help before but at times the professor is busy with other students which overwhelms me so I leave (not getting help.) :-(

I'm a wreck with this course!! !! It's good I passed Spanish 1 but I'm going into Spanish 2 barely understanding Spanish!! ! How do I deal with my meltdown issues and cope with the material? My meltdown IMO is I feel bad OMG! I'm not getting this AT ALL!! !! OMG OMG OMG! Then I breakdown. :-( I actually CARE about not understanding the material!! ! I'm not some dumbass who is like "Oh I nod and don't really care."

(Some student said something to that affect DUMB GUY!) I CARE! AND HATE I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS STUFF! It is with the same professor so she's understanding of my meltdowns and is nice and caring. :-) So that's a plus. I'm just nervous and not sure how to handle my meltdowns and such. Thanks.

Your situation sounds very stressful! Is it required that you take Spanish for school? Maybe another language might come easier for you.

Or you may also consider: I have a really hard time accepting that there are things that I don't understand, and won't without a lot of effort. This is very frustrating! One thing I've liked about myself is that I'm a quick learner and have a variety of interests, so it's been hard to let some things go when they cause so much inner discomfort.
When I do I feel better though.

Hope that's helpful.

Do you have to take the Spanish for your degree? If not, maybe pack it in. Some meltdowns aren't worth fighting.

Accept your limitations perhaps, this sounds like the wrong class for you.

However if you really must take the class you should set aside some time with your professor or some sort of Dean and sort something out that would make the class less stressful on you: ask if you can be given breaks in between classes, and if you have an official diagnoses of ASD then you are probably allowed extra time on tests and some other concessions, do they know you have AS? If not then you should fill them in.

Yes I have to have 2 semesters of the same foreign language. My professor is a nice lady who has a family member with Asperger's and she's very understanding of my meltdowns. I'm shocked she passed me with a C since I got B's C's and an F on the tests. She's very lienient so if you put one or two spanish words and some english then she gives you points if you only knew a few of the spanish words and wrote at least something and had an idea of what the sentence was trying to tell you. :-)

I wish I didn't have to take foreign language. :-( My meltdowns are emotional in the fact I feel bad OMG! I'm not understanding this stuff. I'll see how next semester goes in 2 weeks. I'm looking to review the textbook before then and to look ahead to the new chapters (6,7,8,9) Spanish 2 is the same textbook and we only cover 4 chapters in it vs. 5 for Spanish 1. :-) Thanks. I wish I could skip it so so so so do.

In my experience, school is a great place to learn grammar, but not a foreign language itself. Foreign languages are best learned by being immersed in them.

I would normally never recommend watching movies and such, but if you have DVD movies, what I would do is to put on Spanish subtitles and watch them over and over until you begin to be able to connect with the Spanish.

Another trick would be to watch Spanish language commercials. This is actually the best approach, as advertisers do their work in such a manner to make it memorable, i.e., not easily forgotten.

I had a year of Latin in high school and a year of Spanish too. I did best in Latin because it's not a spoken language; it is usually only written. I did poorly in Spanish because of my limited auditory language skills.

Hi!

The meltdowns sound really bad, I hated having them in college. I cried in so many campus bathrooms. All of them, probably.

While I don't have any specific advice from my experience because for some reason language and I have gotten along quite well (especially written), I did think of one idea that is something I would resort to if I were in a similar situation.

I don't want to offend you though by offering such a childish idea so please don't take it that way :)

I would try the Dvds from Muzzy for children to learn Spanish. IF you can stand things that are for children (I love cartoons, so it would probably work quite well for me).

It looks pretty expensive to buy, but maybe it would be available from the library, or it looks like it is on ebay for a lower price. I understand being a student usually means not having a lot of money, but if it would elevate your mood to have more understanding of spanish until you can finish the class, it might be worth a look.

ebay- Muzzy dvds

I hope you find strategies that will work for you!

French is tricky, a lot of silent letters and the pronunciation is harder. With Spanish you say everything you see and the rules governing the language are actually much tighter than English. If you're good with English I find it helps to think of the real word or original word for things as it'll be very similar to Spanish being as how English has a lot of roots stolen from Latin after the Roman invasion of Britain. Good luck with your course OP, one more semester to get through :)
