I al a self-diagnoses aspie, read about it last year, reading many (but not all) of the symptoms reads like my autobiography. Also, many of the threads here and on other forums I can totally relate to - most of us with it are pretty much in the same boat.

I have told family and a couple of friends about my discovery, and some of them don't understand why I think I have it. they say "oh, everyone feels uncomforatable in different situations, many people have very few friineds, etc." but you know what? They are confident, married with kids, have friends to go places and do things with, etc. They just don't get what it's like to have never been able to fit into the groove, to be totally alone in a crowd, to want to be able to talk to epople and connect with them and are totally clueless how to go about that. Even my mom (she's 80, so I cut her slack in this) doesn't get it. Okay, she has is unsure of her self in certain things, doesn't speak up when she should at times, but that has been since she got older. She had friends when sh was younger, got married, (along with my dad) raised me and my sister, etc. She doesn't get it. Most of my NT family/friends get it.

Try never being able to ask out a girl, try not having a close friend to be able to call and say "hey, do you want to go to a movie tonight," try not being able to speak up when you know you should about something. Why can't they all understand?

I also have a lot of family and friends who don't get it. The thing is that unlike you, I have a Dx. They still don't get it. I also don't like the way that some people talk about aspies who are self-diagnosed.

My family DOESN'T want to get it. My mother has been in denial for so many years (of course, I was born back when Autism & everything else under the sun was the parent's fault) that even when I go get FORMALLY dxd, she would still deny it. Just habit. But I know she actually knows deep inside that its true.
I've only told a few friends & you folk HERE about this. I'm going to tell my doctor(s) about it, of course. Considering my employer. That one is a maybe. They already know I have Crohn's disease & arthritis. I don't know about this..

Sincerely,
Matt
