Is Skrillex overrated?

Don't ask me. That's all I have to say.

Yes and no. Is the media oversaturated with Skrillex right now? Yes? Is his stuff good? Yes. I mean, as far as things go, he has his own unique style and it's pretty cool. He's been around for quite a while, he originally started making stuff under Sonny Moore, in 2009?, that's quite some years ago now in 2012. I remember hearing Skrillex last year, early 2011, like about this time last year, my random longlost elementary schoolfriend recommended him to me, after I told him dubstep was lame. Well, I rocked Skrillex all last summer. It was one random thing in my life I got to be a hipster with and be like "LOL I liked him before he was popular." I actually predicted "yeah, he's gonna be on the radio pretty soon" and I was right.

So, I don't think he's overrated per se, just he's overexposed now, and now random little 12 year olds like Skrillex and think they're the coolest people ever. That and Skrillex is EVERYWHERE, nowadays. So yeah, I don't listen to Skrillex much anymore for those reasons, but I'm guessing in a year or so when the Skrillex thing dies down some, I'll start listening a bit more again.

But yeah, not overrated, just overexposed.

Well I didn't know who skillrex was, so I looked him up on youtube. If he currently is "rated" then yeah I'd say he's overrated lol (I'm not into that kind of music though)

Yes. When you can hear it everywhere and everyone's talking about it, it gets annoying quickly. In my opinion there are better artists out there than Skrillex, he is overrated

I only heard his collaborations with KoRn, and I'm not enthusiastic about it. I didn't know he was popular.

Crap is crap.

I like a lot of his mixes. He seems to have a flair for it...haven't heard something that good in a long time. Skrillex is awesome to me.

Been buying electronic music on vinyl since 1987 or so, Skrillex means nothing to me. It all very white and loud with no funk.

Skrillex and Deadmau5 both seem to be products of the same thing - ie. clubbers vs. ravers. Pretty much clubbers want everything to sound like Timberland and T Pain, if it doesn't they'll walk right off the dance floor in unison and essentially ruin any dj or producer who dares to play something outside of that box. They're also, whether or not its a good thing, a significantly bigger audience than the ravers and those who want the kind of music that ravers would want to here. Enter Skrillex and Deadmau5 (not to mention another guy I've heard about, Datsik, who's kind of another Skrillex), who've kinda stuck to their roots in making either what's built off of trance or dubstep respectively but who've jumped on the Timberland/T-Pain sound and in essence tried to sound more like club music.

Are Skrillex and Deadmau5 talentless? Of course not. Does it annoy people on the other hand who are into the legit stuff, know dozens of artists as good in their respective genres, and then have some guy or girl they meet trying to introduce them to Skrillex or Deadmau5 but at the same time not feeling like they have any idea the other way when the other person rattles off a bunch of names they've never heard of? Yeah, there's definitely a bit of that.

In short do they suck? No. OTOH, do people have to right to say that if it was any good it would be on the radio or popular in the clubs hence the underground kids are just make-it-up-as-we-go egotists and w*kers? They can say that all they want but, clearly no. By that model one could argue that there were maybe two metal bands worth listening to - Metallica and Megadeth, two punk bands you're allowed to be okay with - Green Day and Blink 182, and if you liked anything other than 2Pac or Biggie or currently go outside of Soulja Bwoy or Kanye you're not in good shape by that standard either.

I'm not into Skrillex really, but I think some of his songs are a little overrated.

I love Skrillex and dubstep. My most favourite DJ is Deadmau5. I'm just drawn to that kind of music. It brings out my emotions. Are they over-rated? Maybe..but not to me. I'm happy that electronic music is finally coming out again.

Skrillex is overrated, yes, because he's a mainstream artist. That's not to say he isn't good, but there are plenty of better dubstep artists out there.

Over in the UK or Europe something this would pack a floor, here in the US it would clear a floor - maybe even the whole club.

Its not to say that we haven't had great US artists along the way. In the way of dubstep the US also has Babylon System, Christine Vaccine, Machinedrum, Sepalchre, FaltyDL, 6Blocc, some guys down south called Sines, and I'm sure there are more houshold names I've seen. Likewise, even when jungle/dnb was new and techstep was just beginning in the UK you had guys like Stakka and KT as well as Dara, AK1200, 3D, Phantom 45, Snuggles, etc. who were right here in the states to match. The difference with them though - none of them were making any attempt at the club scene.

Probably an even better example and going with a *big* household name in the UK. Most of his stuff, while great, would also only work at a rave here as well:
