I need to go purchase a laptop and wondered what was a good choice? Someone said macbook. Agree or disagree or suggest one. It needs to be lightweight yet sturdy and easy to use. Enough memory for photo uploads and downloads and storage of information.

Hi,

Try to avoid Acer laptops, the price could be very low but they are a lots of return fo repair with this brand.

I'll be off topic but Acer desktops doesn't break as much as laptops.

I'm sorry but I don't know what to suggest for a laptop.

Avoid Toshiba. I have a Toshiba.

You probably can't go wrong with a common brand like HP+Compaq.

Well, since you can run PC software on one now, and Apple has a good reputation for hardware*, a MacBook would probably be good too. I have an Apple PowerMac.

* Not to say they haven't had their duds -- however, they are always willing to exchange or replace faulty products and their tech support is phenomenal

I bought a Macbook Pro for school and have been having trouble with it ever since. I would avoid Apple products altogether. As I recently found out, Apple only has a 3 day return policy (yes, I said 3 DAY). And support coverage only lasts 3 months, after that you have to pay.

as mentioned above, avoid Toshiba. I've had 3 and they've all sucked. Great at first then they slowly deteriorate, regardless of OS reinstalls, driver updates, etc. It's almost like the machine slowly loses the will to live.
Bear in mind, tho, that I've a friend who's owned 4 Tosh laptops and swears by them.
So far I've seen good things on the Dell laptops I've worked on.
IBM Stinkpads... meh... they're ok for taking notes and that's about it.

Also, invest in a security device or two for the laptop/bag. Seen some that plug into the USB port and a) can be cabled to a post, and b) sound a bloody loud alarm if the unit's moved. Most laptop thefts are the result of negligence ("but I just looked away for a second!"... no, you were gone for 5 minutes, and, a second's all it takes) or a vehicle breakin.
