No, and it's mean if you ask me. I'd hate to find out someone was with me out of pity.

I've seen it happen to a friend or two and have been pranked by it in my early years. Needless to say, neither scenario is fun.

It happens unfortunately. I have had it happen to me and I kind of knew too.

No. It's no different than cheating.

Yeah, it is. And who really has time to be with someone they don't like? :?

It happened to me...twice. The second time lasted a day and I thought "That thing you said last night WASN'T true was it?", but yeah, people do it.

Perhaps they did it so that you would not feel lonely on Valentine's Day. People don't understand that you may not need someone around on a holiday. Odds are it was an act of friendship misinterpreted, or maybe that person didn't want to feel lonely themselves and wanted to be with you on Valentine's Day in an non-sexual context.

Did the term pity date come after a fight?

Yes... sort of. I was genuinely interested in him as a friend, and we went to a pub and later a cafe and talked and talked for hours... and did it again. I had a really great time and he was and is a very interesting person to talk with, but he just did not interest me as anything more than a friend. My mother suspected he was hitting on me, but due to my asperger's, I didn't want to ask him unless he said no, and then it would be awkward. But, it turns out he was interested, and when I got a boyfriend, he was really really pissed off and now he won't talk to me. Oops.

It's probably one of the cruelest things you can do to someone like me... feign interest just to see how far you can take it. It's unforgivable.

:-/

Someone did it once to see if they could get me to *move*, and when I was ready, they let me know it was a HUGE joke. That was a really long time ago, and I still don't "get it."

Cruel. Just cruel.
