I started cutting my own hair about a decade ago, after I got sick of going to some place to have it done. I bought a pair of clippers with attachments for $20 at a Wal-Mart, and it's been working out ever since.

No, but I do have my mother cut it instead of going out anywhere. A bit embarrassed about not always keeping it clean, and besides that, I really don't care to have convoluted options to have to choose from when all I want is for it to be shorter.

Some years ago I came across some hair scissors in my mother's effects after she died. My sister didn't want them, and neither did my brothers, but I did so I kept them. I had often had times of no employment, so I was used to money being tight, and saw a way to cut costs by doing some trims. I also have gotten kind of fat for the salon chairs, and the rim on the shampoo sinks really, really, really hurts the back of my neck, so I had other reasons, to consider this issue, too. Since then I have done a number of trims. I am not good enough to do a full cut, but I do my bangs and over my ears several times a year. My step mom used to cut her kids's hair and still cuts her own and my father's hair. They are snow birds, so when they come back up here in the spring and before they leave for the south in the fall, my step mom gives me a full cut. I shampoo my hair before going to their summer house, or before she comes here to cut my hair, and I can sit in any kitchen type chair while she does it. So, no more problems fitting into the chair or with hurting my neck on the shampoo sink. Also, when I do my between cut trims, I sit in front of a full length mirror on my bedroom mirror, so I have a good view of what I am doing. I also put a small garbage can between my feet, and clip a sheet around me. I am not a great cutter, but it still looks better after I do it, than right before I do a trim. I have very thick hair that tends to mushroom out after it grows out, so the home trims do help. I also have to avoid volumizing or body building shampoos and conditioners because of this. I already have too much natural volume.

I did try a Flowbee a few years ago that a relative got for me, but it was unable to handle my thick hair at all. I returned it to the relative, so he could try it or return it to the person he bought it from on Ebay, or resell it himself.

I do think it's a good idea to at least be able to do a between cuts trim of your own hair. And it doesn't have to be perfect, just better than what it looks like before the trim. I am very pleased with the fact that I kept my mother's hair scissors, and am able to get some good use out of them. I used them twice this winter to good effect. :D

i've used a flowbee for about 2 decades now, i wouldn't have it any other way. the problem with most professional hair cutters [whatever they're called] is that they all have their own ideas of how hair should be cut and styled, which they tend to impose on their customers. i got sick and tired of arguing with them to cut it a certain way, so i said to hell with it and got the flowbee.

yes i do, been doing so for over a year now. I let it grow a bit then cut a bunch off and just trim it into shape as it grows until i cut it off again.

Not anymore. Once I tried to cut my own hair and it turned out to be a disaster. In the middle of it, I literally ran off to the barber and begged for help. Needless to say, it was embarrassing.

"Why did you cut your own hair?"
"Well, I thought I should at least give it a try."

Thankfully, the barber was skilled enough to fix it back up to how it should look.

Edit: I'm a guy.

I would love to learn how to cut my own hair. It would be wonderful to give myself the cut I want without putting all my faith in a complete stranger to give me what I want, especially since most of my haircutting experiences don't go exactly the way I want them to. I'm a firm believer in the saying, "If you want something done right, do it yourself".

Oh yes, I completely agree! I usually like to wear my hair short, but whenever I go to a hair stylist and ask for a cut, 9 times out of 10 they are very hesitant to cut it to the length I want it and wind up not cutting it as short as I like.

There was one hairstylist I went to who wasn't like that at all, and I loved her for it. The first time I sat in her chair, one of her coworkers teased, "Careful, she really likes cutting off long hair", and she cut off all my hair in like under 10 minutes with sweeping, hacking motions. That was the best experience I've ever had at a hair salon.

This was the same scenario for the next 3 or 4 times I went in. But the last time I went in for a cut, on my birthday back in November, she wasn't there and the woman who wound up cutting my hair didn't do a very good job. I've been afraid to go back to the hair salon ever since then. My hair is starting to get long again and I hate it, but I'd hate being stuck with a bad haircut even more.

as long as your hair isn't too thick or long, the flowbee will work fairly well, but it requires a bit of patience to use, as you have to make the same oval dipping movement to engage your hair ends into the cutting device, a few hundred times, for best results. if your hair is relatively short to begin with, you'd probably get away with about a hundred movements. you can't just run it through your hair, you must make the dipping movements with the unit. but for me it is worth it, as it has paid for itself many times over. one bit of advice, keep the blades oiled.

I do, on the rare occasion I actually want it cut..
I don't want to talk to, be touched by or pay a hairdresser.

Yes, I cut my own hair. I've recently taken quite a bit off the length and, at the moment, it's kind of like the Oracle from the Matrix, but a little longer. I always get compliments after I've given myself a little impromptu trim. It's tidy and I'm really happy with it. My issue is that I have really curly hair and hairdressers freak out when they see me come in. They cut it when it's wet and, when it's dry, there are bits longer than others (like the straighter bits at the nape of my neck). I always come home and give it a tidy up. I'm not sure the Afro hairdressers here would be any better. My best friend and her sisters (who are Jamaican) have ended up with relaxed hair, which I definitely don't want.
