Don't know whether to laugh or cry--or both. Yesterday I was officially diagnosed with asperger's syndrome.

He also thinks I am eligible for some sort of disability.

I don't really have a question or anything, just thought I'd make the 'announcement.'

It might be different where you live but here we only qualify for disability if we cannot work and are not in school. I am in university (otherwise I would spend every day of my life in my house probably, and I cannot hold a job), so the government will not give me a single penny in disability. I also have classic autism, am 28, and live with my parents who pay for me and also cannot get money. Hopefully you have more luck than I do here.

Hi Jocli, we used to say congrats if someone just got diagnosed, so Congrats!

How does it feel to be recognized on the spectrum? Does it make you feel better having a name for your difficulties? In what respect do you feel AS disables you? What are the issues that you'd like to get help with a little, and in what form would you imagine it?

I am intensely relieved to find there's a name for this (& that it's not schizophrenia.) When it comes to social interaction I am beyond being shy even though some of the iime I manage to cope with it. I've been living with it a long time now & I get frustrated & irritable & take it out on people close to me, & then later I don't understand why. He suggested an antidepressant might help with that but I don't like relying on medication for anything. (Wouldn't be better to eliminate the cause rather than treating the symptom?)

Of course there are some things I wouldn't trade...as in special interests.

Hi Jocli, and as was mentioned earlier by OJani, congratulations . Whether or not you see Asperger's as a gift or a curse, you are now amongst many of us with Asperger's. Although I regard Asperger's as a gift in my life, I also acknowledge the challenges of it. And this community is great for support. But you probably already know that. Don't hesitate to post about your concerns and experiences.

Congrats to you! I go in for my diagnosis at 2:15 today. I have been up all night thinking about it.
