Matt Smith beats Tennant. The Doctor had not long annihilated his own people, why Tennant was always smiling and happy I don't know. Smith is more subdued and resigned.

Why Tennant was made into the kissing doctor is beyond me. Aside from that, which is just bad writing, Tennant was very much the epitome of the doctor, while Smith is almost there, but not quite.

I think I prefer David Tennant to the current Doctor, a bit. My daughter was devastated when she heard we were getting a new doctor, as she loves David Tennant. But, within 10 mins of watching the first episode with Matt Smith, she was happy. She still prefers David, but loves Matt too.

Now, I love both of them, but I think they're very different Doctors.

Tennant's Doctor didn't seem to really care when he wiped out his entire species besides himself, and was very happy go lucky all the time, which I didn't quite get, also, he was made into too much of a romantic human I think towards the end, but that's more down to writing. Playing the part in the well-written episodes he was fantastic. I loved that episode where he and Martha had to beat Richard Lazarus who was sucking the life from humans in order to stay young...

Smith is the youngest Doctor there has ever been, and I think therefore had more to learn when he began, but has now got into the role amazingly and I love him. I think the writing has improved on a whole since he joined as well, which is nothing really to do with him, because he's not the writer, but still. My favourite ever Doctor Who episode was 'When The Doctor Met Vincent', but that was probably more to do with a love of Vincent van Gogh than Matt Smith.

It's a hard one. In the end, I think I have to choose David Tennant, because he's more sexually appealing. That has just rendered my last two arguments pointless.

Ditto! I love everything to do with Vincent.

Tennant is the better Doctor in my opinion, but Sylvester McCoy trumps them both. :P

I do agree that the writing on the show improved when Matt Smith took over. It may have something to do with Moffat taking over Davies place as head writer. That's just me guessing. I like both Doctors a lot. Tennant's Doctor was more quirky and happy-go-lucky while Matt is introspective. I like Matt slightly more but both are excellent doctors.

I now prefer Matt to David, but I always understood Tennant's doctor to be hiding his pain (caused by, as you say, annihilating his people) by putting on a happy/chirpy mask, (seen most with the Donna series).

But that's what's cool about the show - lots of interpretations possible.

I prefer Matt Smith because he's more quirky and alien than David Tennant, which is how I think the Doctor should be. I won't deny that David Tennant was excellent as the Doctor (especially in The Waters of Mars and Last of the Time Lords) but I like Matt because of his strangeness, the emotions he can convey with his eyes that fit a 900 year old alien, how bad*ss his Doctor is (see The Pandorica Opens and/or A Good Man Goes To War) and his love of bow ties and fezzes (and stetsons) which I think is really good writing.

I'm really torn. While Tennent is undoubtably the better actor, I find Matt Smiths approach so much more interesting.
Matt Smith seems so much more like a 900 year old alien. He's weird and clumsy in and almost Aspergers way which makes him seem seperate to all the other human characters. I also love the way he seems to have combined mannerisms from every previous doctor in his performance. The shoulder hunch of Hartnell, Troughton's quizzical expression, Mccoy's frown, Colin Bakers eyebrow raise ect.
Tennant was one of the best Doctors, but Matt Smith is THE Doctor.
