ATI Radeon HD 4850 1GB
3.5in Floppy Drive

i doubt it i gained a few % but that was it under uniengine, that was between win7 and kubuntu 10.4
if you dont believe me try running a comparison yourself using the uniengine(one of the only cross platform opengl benchmarks i know)
you could also try one of the several burn in testers for cpu calculation times if that is what your interested in, my maxxpi2 test calculated pi to 16M digits in 52 seconds on normal priority while listening to youtube and 10 tabs open,(ie. just ran it on this win7 installation while writing this post)

in short your comparison is hyperbolic and while i agree linux runs more efficiently it doesnt undo 5 years or more of actual hardware development, especially in the GFX area, i had your card(actually i had the 4870gx2 version,) and changed to the one i had now and still felt quite the improvement both in benchmarks and subjective experience.

my specs
core i5 2550k @ 4,3 ghz using scythe ninja 3
8 gb ddr3 1600 mhz 6-6-6-18 ram
2 tb raid 0 array using 2 seagate 7.5k rpm disks
260gb 15k rpm hp server harddisk
ATI HD6950 2gb unlocked to HD6970 -2 pipelines

iMac Mid 2011:
500GB HDD
4GB Ram (Going to upgrade to eight at one point)
i5 Sandy Bridge @ 2.5 Ghz Quad
AMD Radeon Mobility 6850 512Mb GDDR5
OSX Lion 10.7.2
Dual booted with Windows 7 for the rare occasions I game.

My Zotac machine (Second machine that sits right next to the iMac on my desk):
1GB DDR 2 (Going to max it to 4)
Dual Core Atom @ 1.66
Nvidia 218 (Basically Nvidia ION gen 2)
Runs Kubuntu 12.04 (Well it will be 12.04 when I have my screen fixed or not as the case may be :( )
Get ready for this one...... A whopping 40GB HDD! I will upgrade this when I can be bothered to use my brothers old PS3 HDD (His PS3 is broken and he has agreed, dont worry).

My Macbook Aluminium:
Not very reliable. Has a tonne of casing chips (I take care of it like its the most delicate thing in the world, but it still managed to get like that) and a few scratches on the bottom of it.
I have no idea why I just gave a description of the condition of my Macbook... But there you go :P
2GB Ram DDR 3
9400M 512Mb
160GB HDD
OSX 10.6.8

I have been saving since last November to purchase a new Macbook Pro (Not a new new one, I ment one of eBay or something) and almost have enough money.

AMD Phenom II X4 960T.
4GB DDR3 1366 MHz RAM
Sapphire AMD Radeon 6870
~150 GB 5400 RPM (laptop) HDD -- think it's a Seagate but not certain. I pried it out of my first (long broken) laptop because it had Windows on it already.
1 TB Western Digital Caviar Green HDD -- this used to be a WD elements external but I took it out of the enclosure. I think it's a 5400 RPM drive but it's good enough to store my games and music.
ASRock Extreme4 motherboard
Antec 550W PSU
Generic DVD drive
Generic mid-tower ATX case
Windows Vista 32 bit

I still use the stock cooler that the CPU came with, which isn't that great. I have to leave the case open for the case to get any ventilation. Someday when I have more disposable income & the parts are on sale I will get a Cooler Master Hyper 212 to replace the stock cooler, and get a new case that has cable management built in.

Also meaning to upgrade to 64 bit Windows 7 shortly & upgrade the RAM to 8GB 1600 ram. Windows Vista was essentially free since it was on the HDD already so I'm not complaining.

I'm thinking about getting a GTX 680 since I have 1250 Watt power supply.
Do you think I would see extra frames in games like max payne 3 and Diable 3 from my GTX 460's.
