I have seen a variety of opinions on Luna Lovegood and would like to know, do you believe she might have Asperger's? Why or why not?

I think she might. A big factor in her weirdness is her not thinking about how other people see her. Evanna Lynch's portrayal in the movies speaks in a rather dreamy monotone that seems very aspie.

I'd never thought about it before but yeah I think she could be. Also, she has amazing hair.

Maybe JK Rowling based Luna Lovegood on someone she once knew who
to this day, is still an undiagnosed Aspie or based her on someone she knows
who has a son or daughter who is an Aspie.

But I really don't know, it's hard to tell.

The character herself seems fixed on details and is fairly literal minded. That is why I vote yes for Aspie.

Very interesting query. I've had plenty of times where people told me I'm like Luna. I love how she always seems to be in her own little world. She certainly sees details that the other characters always gloss over. She's painfully honest without even realizing that most people are uncomfortable with it. Also, she doesn't express much emotion, even though it's clear that she highly values the few friends she has. She's probably ecstatic to be around them, yet she doesn't show it via body language. Not to mention, she couldn't care less for social convention and how she appears to the public. Giant roaring lion hat? What could be wrong with that? :P

On the other hand, she's not exactly the most logical thinker. She believes many of the stories from The Quibbler. Though it's true, she's heavily influenced by her father, and sometimes his stories do at least have a grain of truth behind them. It's also hard to tell what's logical and what's not in a world where magic exists.

I'm also not sure if she has any special interests. Her love of The Quibbler might, in itself, be a special interest, but is there anything else we've seen her obsess over? Maybe we don't get to see much, since she's usually over in Ravenclaw and we don't get to see her very often. She very well might be going through many special interest cycles when she's not part of the plot...

... Also, you guys may be interested to know that when I type "Does Luna Lovegood" into Google, the third suggestion it gives me is, "Does Luna Lovegood have Asperger's?"

I never really thought about it, but it *does* make a kind of sense.

An interesting blogpost I found that makes a pretty good argument for Luna being an Aspie (as well as highlighting some positive aspects of Aspieness!)- http://landofmysojourn.wordpress.com/20 ... rs-traits/ The author also included two other posts that are also about Luna/Asperger's. I like this one best, though. Apparently the author feels that magical creatures are Luna's special interest (and her friends might also be one, he posits.) I hadn't thought of that before.

Dunno about having Asperger's. Though it's not surprising to me that aspies have an easy time relating to her.

Either way, she's adorable and easily my favorite character.

I think Luna might be ASD, but it's probably more likely she has something else.

Yes and no.
She exhibits an awful lot of empathy for an Aspie.
