Today, while perusing my Facebook wall, a particular post made by my cousin caught my eye. He remarked that America was becoming too gay, and that he needed to get a passport. I jokingly commented, "What's wrong with that?" To which he responded, "For God's sake!!"

I know his remarks were kind of vague, but there's no other way to construe it as expressing anything other than homophobic sentiment. And to think that I grew up with him, and he was my primary playmate growing up.

This really gets me to resent our society which fosters homophobia.

My advice: life is more fun when you stop worrying about other people's beliefs and prejudices. :)

I hate it when 'gay' is used as a slang word in this way to mean 'backwards' or 'inferior'. What they are describing has no relevance to sexuality whatsoever. Many people who use 'gay' in this context don't see themselves as homophobic they just follow the trends promoted to them by culture and their peers and it doesn't matter to them if they offend people because they think they sound 'cool'.

Nope, he was specifically referring to homosexuality. Not only did he say that he was not joking over "getting a passport," he followed up by remarking that God was going to judge America and that he didn't want to be here when that happened.

My cousin and I are hardly even close anymore despite our past, but it feels bad enough to hear this from a stranger, let alone a relative of mine! Not only am I going to have to deal with the fact that the cousin whom I grew up with is homophobic, I can also surmise that he'll likely never attend my same-sex wedding (should I have one) or give his blessings for me and my future hypothetical partner. Nope, I'll just be that "dear cousin" whose "lifestyle" he disapproves of.
