Questions about problem solving skills?

I know I ask a lot of questions here, but from what I've seen, you're all wise enough to sufficiently answer them. Thanks in advance. :)

Now, I'm not exactly a aficionado for things like cross words, chess, strategy games and the like, but it bothers me greatly that people are conceited towards me since I'm often not as good as other people are. Otherwise, I'm a quick learner, and when I focus on something that arouses great interest or delight, I pursue it feverishly and accomplish what I want to accomplish, but I digress. What exactly do these types of problem solving skills have to do with how smart somebody really is?
