They have problems with keeping track of numbers in their mind? I have a really hard time doing that. Also, I have terrible concentration skills, I find it really hard to focus when I'm surrounded by people.

How do you cope with these problems? If you do have them.

My daughter is autistic and she loves math.

I have no problems with keeping track of numbers in my mind. As a kid I learned pi to 150 decimal places. My head is full of telephone numbers past and present, dates of birth, similarly with pass-phrases to numerous computer systems. I don't think everyone on the autistic spectrum is the same in this respect though.

You could write them down--carry a little notepad to help you remember.

if i wanted to find the answers to 2/8 and 10 x 6 and then i wanted to multiple the answers i'd probably have a problem with remembering the answer to the first by the time i'd finished the second. Ok that was a simple example but that's the general idea. It's like to think of one thing i have to completely clear my mind of everything, then when i move on i have to clear my mind again, even if it means forgetting something i only just thought about. When i work out 10 x 6 i'm so focused on the second question that the answer to 2/ 8 just get's lost, my short term memory is just weird . I'd definitely have to do what the above poster said and write answers down.

I think it'd be related to the fact we're so single minded.

Writing them down makes all the difference. I have to listen to phone messages repeatedly to remember phone numbers and even then I have to dial them a few times before they take, whereas I can write down the street address or Google Map it with less effort

I have issues with keeping track of many numbers. I have to remember my SSN, my student ID, multiple phone numbers, ages, birthdays, etc. And although I have been able to remember many of them, I have issues with remembering anything outside of the important numbers.

I have bad concentration skills as well, I mean, during my areas of intense interests I can research for hours and hours without even knowing that other things are going on around me. But I can be reading a book or playing a game, etc, and any slight movement, or sound, will mess with my concentration.

This is the problem I have with numbers. I don't have a problem remembering digits like phone numbers. Made it impossible to do math homework.

I thought it was a said Autistic trait to be able to remember numbers?

I can't remember numbers but nor can most people who I know.

I can type over a hundred words per minute (if I remember my stats correctly), but have someone look over my shoulder while I'm typing and I produce about 100 errors per minute.

Although I used to be very good with math in school, I do have a hard time remembering numbers and writing/transcribing them. I always switch digits. I usually carry a pocket notebook with me, since I prefer not to rely too much on my short term memory.

No, only SOME autistics are good with numbers. Its not a universal trait.
Personally, I have the same problem. If I write them down, I am fine. But I never remember strings of numbers. I could never recall my combination on my locker at school or on my bicycle lock.
I personally, excell at reading & creative writing (poetry mostly)

Sincerely,
Matthew

I'm pretty good with numbers, but when I have even minor distractions, like people talking, it becomes very hard to do.

I am terrible at adding and subtracting in my head unless it's something like 5 + 8. I have a hard time with 346-253 and similar. I have a hard time focusing around people, too.
