Hi guys & girls,
My name is Cameron but my friends call me Cam, I'm a 30 year old male who lives in Melbourne, Australia who was one of the pioneers of AS, What do I mean by that? I was diagnosed way back in 1992 by an excellent psychiatrist called Dr Roger Foote (I'm not sure if he's still practicing)
At the time it was thought i would never finish high school, be a social outcast etc.
I proved everyone wrong, I successfully completed high school followed by a tertiary education majoring in Business Administration. Im in full time employment in a customer service based role for a multinational company and have worked for them for 8 years now.
Don't get me wrong it wasn't always easy and my current employer is aware of my disability. I was and still am very shy in large groups of people but gradually over the years have learned to adapt, especially because in my job I have to constantly solve problems and make sure people are happy, I also have to talk for most of the day which has been great for my self esteem and self confidence.
My hobbies are pretty stock standard and include: movies, music, sport (mainly AFL, Ice Hockey and baseball) travel etc.
Actually the past 10 years travel has been my passion, I have been extremely fortunate to have travelled all over the world. My favourite place is Canada.
With eye contact I've learnt over the years to adapt.
I Know I'm extremely fortunate and that I was very lucky things fell into place...well except for my dating life but I have hope that'll eventually fall into place!
Anyway I will be travelling through America and Canada (again) in October/November so it would be great to make a few new friends across the pacific or even locally.
I was involved a few years back with a few AS social groups here in Melbourne (autism Vic and ASSN) unfortunately though with the ASSN ones being based on the opposite side of the city and on a work night I haven't made it to one in over a year!
Cheers
Cam
