I've been experienced hightened anxiety for a long time now which leads to stress which embarisingly leads to some nasty bowel movements and because of that I get highly dehidrated and sick. I went to the doctor today to see what could be done and he prescribed me Propranolol for my anxiety and Loperomide for my bowels. Has anybody else experienced anything like this? If so how did the medication work out?

First off, please don't get dehyrated. The following is from a World Health Organization pamphlet:

"If ORS [Oral Rehydration Solutions] are not available, mix 6 teaspoons of sugar plus one level teaspoon of salt in one litre of safe water («taste of tears») and drink as indicated in the table."
http://www.who.int/topics/test/food_saf ... travel.pdf

Other sources, including other World Health Organization sources, recommend only half a teaspoon of salt per liter (~ 34 ounces). So, underdo the salt, let's say 2/3's a teaspoon. For me, like when I've been moving all day and am hot and dehydrated, drinking gatorade makes me feel worse. I think it's so concentrated it sits in my gut drawing fluid from the rest of my body, like drinking sea water. A friend who plays softball recommends half gatorade, half water. I could almost see going with one-third gatorade, two-thirds water.

=================

I have experienced and struggled with bouts of depression. What I have read is that the first antidepressant may not work but a later one may, that it's trial and error in a respectable sense. And my guess is that it's largely the same with anti-anxiety medication.

I have Irritable bowl syndrome and know what you mean. When anxiety attacks me I get frequent watery bowl movements with horrid cramps. The doctor put me on one drug that had belladonna in it but it didn't help so he tried another that had a small dose of Librium .(sorry I don't remember the name)and it did help but Medicaid wouldn't cover it and I couldn't afford it.I take Ativan now and I don't have any trouble unless get really stressed and then nothing seems to help.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Gatorade? I don't hink that exists here in Scotland. Anyway I'm going for a blood test soon to make sure I don't have some terrible disease instead of it just being caused by my anxiety. The thought of me potentially haveing a terrible illness just makes me feel more anxious!

There's just no winning.

I had diarrhoea which was put down to anxiety or IBS...I changed my diet and it disappeared.

I removed processed foods, dairy and grains....

If I add them back in the bowel problems come back. If I leave them out, my bowel is quiet even if I am stressed out.

Be sure they have your diagnosis correct. Not only did they get my bowel issues wrong they managed to put me on antidepressants for a sinus infection once because they insisted my headaches were anxiety and depression when they were not! Chronic sinusitis combined with an allergy was what was actually going on but it was diagnosed as a mental health issue by drs and psychiatrists until I pushed for an ENT referral and proper examination and CT scan revealed the infection with a skin prick test confirming the allergy....

Watch it, some drs can be idiots.

And some drs can be guessers and non-listeners, which is perhaps even worse than being an idiot.

Yeah I did go in worrying I was going to have a terrible doctor that would prescribe me wrong stuff and not listen to what I was saying but upon meeting him I was happy to find that he was really friendly and patient with me and it seems that all my problems are gone now after just one day of treatment.

I'm still going for a blood test even though the good treatment results pretty much prove it was down to anxiety. Maybe the blood test will just make me feel safe when it shows that I'm healthy.

Thanks for the diet tips also, My diet has changed alot since January because I got into Karate and I'm alot more healthy now than I used to be.

If it's working, roll with it. I think that's kind of a classic rule of medicine.

And by the way, Welcome to Wrong Planet! :D :jocolor: :bball:
