If you are talking about spam then I am very much against it. Apart from being morally dubious, spam is also a good way to alienate your target market, especially if you are working with a niche market.
When I mentioned mailing lists and forums I should have explained further. If you use forums and mailing lists you need to be an active participant. Frequent forums/mailing lists that are related to your product and become a useful member. Offer advice and generally be helpful. It is fine to let others know you have a product but you also need to be respected. If you just push your product you will be quickly frozen out or banned.
