I am a 50+ wife and Mom. My 26 year old son is a diagnosed Aspie. My husband is an undiagnosed Aspie. I have been married for 27 years. It hasn't been easy, but it sure has kept me on my toes. I am here to understand more and get help for my son. Also I would like to share some of my sucesses and failures. I don't think that I will every stop learning and wanting to understand aspergers. This is my first post, I am like an open book, just ask me and we will have a conversation. My husband is not a talker, and a conversation with my son is like a interrogation  I am not very computer savy so please excuse me if I ask how to do something or make a mistake. So my first question is..any suggestions on getting my son help in understanding money and budgeting his paycheck, I feel like I have tried everything but I know there has to be a way!

First off, proper therapy is a must. Keep going through them till he finds one that can recognize his behavior and habits, and can be comfortable with him.

Next, you may want to get him disability. It's easier if you get a disability specialist.

Lastly, trust him, believe him and take his word seriously. He's not going to lie. Don't be like my mom and think I'm just over-exaggerating and all is fine with me. =P

Hi and welcome to Wrong Planet :)

Does your son appreciate you helping him with his finances? If he does, perhaps you could sit down and write a list of all the incomings and outgoings and work out a plan. You could try taking all the money out as cash and putting it in separate envelopes marked with 'bills', 'food', 'spending money' etc. I do all my banking and finances online now but when I first moved out at 16 I found that the envelopes stopped me from getting into a muddle. Of course, this is only a good idea if you are talking about small amounts of money and you have somewhere secure to keep it.

Thanks for the welcome...some good suggestions..if I knew how to get them into Dan's head. He fully accepts that he has aspergers, but he uses it for an excuse when it works for him. He definitely needs counseling, but refuses to go. He has no clue about money,it's just there to spend, he has no impulse control. The debit card is his downfall. Part of his situation is caused by his Dad, he keeps bailing him out. Dan works fulltime at a job he has had for 6 years. He has no insurance, no savings,no plan. If we can't get him on track his Dad and I probably won't be able to retire in the next couple of years like we have planned on. I have to take some responsibility also. We got a late diagnosis in Dan, at 17. I always knew he was different but didn't know what it was. I was always at school and did alot for him. He was a difficult child, now a difficult man. I really don't know what's next for us. Thanks for letting me ramble on. Any more thoughts would be appreciated! Should I be in a different place with this?
