When I logged on today, the banner at the top of my screen said:

Inbox (1) My Account Log out

Hurray! Someone sent me a PM! But when I went to Inbox, there was nothing there. Was the email deleted by an admin dealing with spammers, or did the person who sent the email close their account, or did the email just disappear in a puff of smoke? Just curious. Thanks.

It's a possibility someone sent you a message and by the time you clicked on it and got to the page, the person who sent it just happened to delete it as you were going to the inbox.

You can delete your own sent PMs before the person opens it. But after it's been opened, you can't delete it anymore.

The same thing happened to me just now. I think it's just a technical glitch.

After you delete the message, try logging out and then back in. See if it still there. I had a message that would keep reappearing until I did that. My standard MOO is to leave myself logged in without logging out explicitly. I just close the browser.

That should be:

It is possible you both had PMs from the scammer I whacked yesterday. When I delete a scammer it also deletes all the scam PMs they have sent (read and unread) but may leave the message indicator showing a message outstanding - just one of the quirks/bugs of the site software.

It can also happen if someone changes their mind and deletes an PM before your read it - you get the email notification of a new PM but no PM.

Been having the same problem. Depending on how many servers are between Wrong Planet (whereever their physical plant is) and you, you might be getting more/less iterations of the site with different sub pages. In other words, the main page might be older and thus include the message flag that the newer message page does not have.

I whacked another PM scammer a few hours ago, so that probably accounts for more people getting notifications of non-existent PMs. Better some members find messages missing though than fall for one of these scamming conmen. Occasionally, naive members have sent the scammers emails and been sucked in. Read the PM Scams thread above for more info...

Thank you for the explanation. I was about make a post asking why I was receiving emails stating that I had private messages, but when I logged in there were none. Whacking two spam account makes sense.

It's happened to me too,I'm new to computers and I thought I wasn't opening it and hoped someone didn't think I was rude by not replying.

No. Not at all.
