One of the odd things about society that I have always tried to figure out is why open garments such as these have become the exclusive clothing of only women. Only here recently have a few daring men (such as myself) started wearing kilts as everyday wear. It just seems to me that it's more anitomically correct for men to wear open garments than women. From a comfort standpoint, I can definitely say a kilt is far more comfortable than pants anyday. Of course, for the maximum comfort, a kilt must be worn "regimental". I'm not trying for a feminine look when wearing something like this, I want it to look all male. Any other guy here ever tried wearing a kilt or skirt? Utilikilts are my favorite!

I've wondered this too! I think it has to do with how a skirt may give visual access to the undies. If a guy doesn't cross his legs in such a way where he squeezes his twig and berries, he may be giving a view he does not intend. I dunno. Does make more sense, though, anatomically. :-)

I've seen goth clothing stores have a lot of manskirts...I'm not really into 'em myself, but they look good with some outfits sometimes.

The only social scene I enjoy is hippie/jam band music festivals and other counterculture stuff, you always see hippie guys in skirts. They say it's cooler in hot weather,as a girl I know it's true for us. Maybe in other places (I live in US) men aren't so crazy homophobic as they are here? Just walking down the street in a skirt would probably get most guys beaten up here. Sad and stupid, but true.

I just recently started wearing skirts and thigh-high socks or tights. Once I've got the money to get a wide enough selection I'm never going back to pants! Skirts are comfy, and somehow I feel happier when wearing them.

I think I have thought about this since I could first analyse the differences between gender. I have posed this question to other people before about gender equality when people have questioned why I have long nails when society seems to dictate only girls can have long nails. But I often get strange looks, like they think I want to crossdress or something, though I am plenty happy with pants, I just think the option should be there to break bariers for gender equality to work both ways.

I think in Scotland men wear tartans or kilts. They're skirts, or similar, I think.

It may have something to do with these:
-It makes women "accessible"
-In history men have shown off their genital area through tight trousers and codpieces. Can't do that with a skirt.
-Men typically had more physical jobs than women, and so trousers were more suitable.

The rest is mostly culture just remaining as it has developed.

http://www.wikihow.com/Wear-a-Tube-Sarong-%28Men%29

Quote:
Sarongs are worn by both men and women in many parts of the world, but especially in south and southeast Asia. This long, brightly colored fabric can be worn on a hot summer day, while lounging around the house, sitting by the pool, and even while entertaining guests for a casual, backyard dinner. Sarongs are extremely comfortable, striking, and versatile, and you don't need to be in an exotic locale to wear one.

Quote:
The sarong takes the place of trousers, so make sure you wear underwear underneath. However, Indonesian and Malay men in rural Southeast Asia countries normally wear sarongs without underwear, especially at home, due to the tropical heat.

edit Steps

1.
1
Wear underpants underneath. It may not be traditional, but this becomes important if you end up sitting like a man (with your legs open) and showing everyone your "Scottish pride".
2.
2
Tuck the back under as you are about to sit down. Generally you don't want to put your bare skin on a chair used by the general public.
3.
3
Though crossing your legs at the knee helps women remember to keep them closed, men might find this uncomfortable. If possible, extend your leg straight in front of you, resting your heels on the ground and crossing them at the ankle. This will cause the knees to remain relatively closed.
4.
4
Don't forget to make sure that the front of the kilt is covering all of the pertinent parts.
5.
5
Make sure the kilt is long enough to accomplish good coverage. There is nothing worse than finding out no matter what you do you are going to be flashing people.
6.
6
Try pressing your knees together. This will help you remember to keep your legs closed.

edit Tips

* Remember that if you need to pick something up from the floor do not bend over at your waist as the back may ride up to your bum and show people a little more than they wanted to see. You will need to bend your knees and keep your legs relatively closed. Some might think it is not manly, but the only other thing you can do is ask someone else to pick the thing up for you. Also, the most correct way (for your back) of picking something up is this way, so you should not bend your back even if not wearing a kilt.
* Wear a kilt pin - it provides some extra weight to pull the edge of the kilt down. Note that the kilt pin does NOT go through both layers of the kilt, but only the top layer.

edit Warnings

* With your legs extended in front of you, you present something of a tripping hazard, so you will need to be somewhat aware of people walking close to you.

I have a good friend who is a proud owner of utili kilts (he matches them with a leather jacket and scuffed combat boots). He maybe wears jeans a month out of the year.

He also likes to screw with us.

He has climbed a tree and yelled, "Hey, look up here!"
He has done a hand stand outside a bar.
He has done cartwheels down the street.
He has stood over a person lying on the ground.

Be responsible/considerate :)

I know, I'm resurecting the thread...

I wonder how many other aspies here wear kilts... I wish my work would accept them (I wore a utilikilt to work exactly twice. Both times seemed to get good reactions, but a couple days after wearing it the second time, the president of my union said it upset my judge. Thus, I am stuck wearing P@*** to work. Still wear a utilikilt on the weekend, and actually have recieved good comments from people. I don't have to worry about starting a conversation, either, other people will do that for me. (always the hardest part for me)

I'm a woman but I love it when men wear skirts... as long as they're handsome (or beautiful, if they are transgendered). One time at the grocery store I saw a skinhead in a skirt and I was very disturbed. However, if he had been trans instead of a skinhead, I would have probably found him to be much more attractive.
