i've played many NES games because i love the NES, however im not going to lie many of the games that operate on the system are probably the hardest in history. for example Adventure Island...a very silly game but man you get on three lives and once you get to level three it's almost impossible to beat and you still have like seven more levels to go... Zelda II was pretty hard but it was at least beatable, treasure island dizzy, ultra space boy, or treasure island dizzy. their many more that are even harder then the ones mentioned but i can't think of them on the top of my head. do you agree?

You forgot the game which many describe as the hardest ever - BATTLETOADSSSSSSSSSS lol

But yes, older games were harder. These days, they make them less hard. Probably to appeal to younger kids who are not as good.

I agree NES games are hard but to say they are the hardest ever would be inaccurate. There are many other systems that had challenging games including the SNES, Genesis, Gameboy and N64. In those days of gaming it seems like more thought and precision was put in to the gameplay itself and not on flashy graphics.

Define hard. Do you mean fairly challenging or simply BS and impossible to play? Spiderman and the Xmen:Arcade's Revenge falls into the latter category.

Many of the NES games from 3rd-party publishers are extremely difficult. Not ones made by Nintendo though.

A lot of times a high difficulty level was used to artificially increase the length of a game by forcing you to play the same level over and over.

It depends on the person who is playing them.
Many despise ET on the Atari 2600 because they find it difficult and annoying but if you know where to go and work it out, it's not really a hard game. It's just having the patience with it.

Another "impossibly difficult" NES game was Dragon's Lair...

Dragon Warrior was pretty hard. I had to level up so many times before I could do anything.

They made the games hard as hell so that they could last a long time. Now we have perfect difficulty on games with the possibility for longer play time. I probably would've just gotten pissed off a lot at the older games if I had started there.

That being said Nintendo is making their games too easy now.

NES games usually didn't allow you to save your game, which made it even harder.

I think the NES generation has the hardest games ( except for thoose "hard for the sake of hard" games like I Wanna Be the Guy. ) I remember playing Battletoads as a kid. I never got past the second stage. I got pretty good at the first one, though. Also Turtles on NES is hard, haven't played it that much, but I never get far before all Turtles are dead.

It is very logical, the budget was smaller which means there was less money for design ( and also less knowledge about design ) and less focus on testing. And when developer tests their on game, they tend to know the physics very well. And since they know the physics of it so well, they tend to make the game alot harder.

Two words: "Silver Surfer."
