For the past several years I have had an obsession over the sensations resulting from having had surgery done on my Achilles tendon, the sensations from where I cut the tendon of my index finger and where on the same finger I have a trigger finger. The minor pains and sensations resulting from these events will never go away. I simply cannot cope with them and whenever I complain about it to family they simply reply by stating "Mind over matter" and stressing that I simply have to get over it. Well I CANNOT. Every day of my life is filled with an intense and unavoidable focus on my injuries and surgeries and the annoying sensations they bring and If I were a weaker person I would have killed myself by now but I am strongly against suicide for any reason so I press on. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on how to better live as a person with aspergers under such infinitely intolerable conditions? I desperately need help.

Find other things to occupy your mind and your time:

- Exercise. It generates mood boosting endorphins.

- Read funny stories and watch funny shows. Humor also generates endorphins.

- Eat healthy, and enough of it. A healthier diet will boost your immune system and is also good for your mind. Skimping on amount of food leads to depression, crankiness, and being more prone to get sick.

- Get enough rest. Being tired leads to depression, crankiness, and being more prone to get sick, too.

- Listen to and/or play music. This is mood boosting.

- Take courses, either in person, or online. Some of the online ones are free. The in person ones are a good way to meet people.

- Volunteer. There are people worse off than we are, who would really appreciate the help. It's also a good way to meet people, and boost your self image and mood.

- Take up a hobby or join a club. These are good ways to meet people who share your interests.

- Get involved in community activities. Attend town meetings, events at local libraries and other local organizations. Attend local sporting events, fairs, and art shows. Attend and/or participate in local theater groups. Attend events held at local houses of worship. These are all great ways to meet people and boost your self image and mood.

- If you aren't working try employment/or self employment. Great way to meet people, boost self image, put money in your wallet, gain experience. Perhaps you should consider self employment. There are many types to choose from.

>> Lawn mowing/yard work/gardening.
>> House cleaning.
>> Errand/shopping service.
>> Wait for service people, so the home owner/renter doesn't have to take time off from work.
>> House/pet sitting.
>> House chores for the elderly/disabled.
>> Handyman.
>> Tutor.
>> Computer maintenance/repair.
>> Website design.
>> Other website based businesses.
>> Paint houses indoor/outdoor.

There are many other self employment opportunities. Your local libraries will have books with lists and descriptions of them, so look into it.

Now, go and do something, and good luck! :D

Sorry, I've had 7 different surgeries over 7 years, but eventually got used to all the scars...
So I can't give you any tips. Guess you are highly sensitive to bodily sensations/pain. I'd suggest searching the board for those terms, as I'm certain there are dozens of such topics with many replies already existing!
Good luck!

P.S.
If this is driving you into suicide territory, it's DEFINITELY time to see a pain specialist!
They exist in hospitals of sufficient size!! !! !

There could have been nerve damage from the surgery, however, I would see a pain specialist, or maybe even an accupunturist.

It's interesting how you have phrased it. You say
Quote:
I have had an obsession over the sensations
which is quite telling. You are obsessed because you noticed some sensations, the sensations themselves are not necessarily the problem, the obsession is. From this perspective, I can see where questor is coming from, by taking up activities to reduce the amount of time you spend thinking and concentrating on the sensations you might get yourself out of the pattern.

It might be an idea to just get yourself checked out to make sure there is no nerve damage anyway, that will reassure you that there is nothing wrong but that you need to alter your way of thinking about the sensations.

I don't doubt you do have the sensations, but your brain might be magnifying them. Don't forget, that people with AS obsess about things and have special interests, so this could be your one.

There might well be massage techniques and as comatt1 suggested, you could try acupuncture. I'm fairly sure I've heard of special massage available post-surgery. It will be beneficial to make sure the tissue is not too tight, as scars create adhesions to the underlying tissue and maybe the nerves have been a bit blocked from properly reconnecting due to thick scar tissue.

De-stressing generally will probably help a bit too. Herbal remedies include St John's Wort and Valerian.

Hope this helps.
