A friend of mine put me on to a company teaching social skills only for aspie males, run by aspie males, mentors and social coaches that have worked with professor Tony Attwood, they run a year long course online with a personal mentor and social coach for the students. I signed up for free and got a free eBook on really Practicle social skills and also they gave me my own personal social coach and mentor for free. The eBook had great information for things like making real friends, comunicating and reading social information in a way that people understand me, don't think I am stupid and make me invisible, how to avoid bullying and being taken advantage of, how to relate to others in a way that makes people want to be friends with me, understanding the unwritten rules of courtship and being attractive to women and so much more...I am really getting a lot out of this free coaching and I am thinking of doing to full one year course. The course costs $300 for the year paid by $20 every two weeks...but you get the training and your own personal social coach and mentor to guide you through, you also get updates to the training free for life! They also have a Aspergers support network for students...would you pay $300 for this course? How much would you pay for this training? It is working for me, I just made my first girlfriend :)

Why does this sound like a banner to me? But anyway, if true, congratulations.

In any event, I dont believe in learning social skills. Never have and never will. First, nothing learned through any program, coaching, or class works in the real world because all people are different and don't always approach us or respond in ways that can be expected. Secondly, we have a basic difference in the way our brains are wired, so that all the "learning" does not create a real difference in us; it is merely acting and faking it... which is tiring and stressful for us and come across as insincere to others (which it usually is).

I hear you when you say that learning social skills seem fake and useless, but what makes sence to me now through this training is that social skills is just an expression of your understanding of social dynamics. The more you understand about what is going in the social environment, the better you respond WITH your actions and this is what social skills are...I also learned that NTs fake it al the time as well, they are just more practiced at faking it. People fake it just a little all the time and the purpose of this is to bridge the gap of differences between people so that they can "relate" to each other more easily, and this "relating" and finding simularitys between each other is when real friends are made...I am sorry if I sound a little robotic, but this is not a banner, I really wanted other aspies opinion on this course because I have no other people that understand to ask their advice :(

I thought all social skills programs for those with AS were for "aspie males", being most clinicians (with the ironic exception of Dr. Attwood) seem to be under the impression that "aspie females" don't exist.

Regardless though, I'm glad you have found a girlfriend.

Do you have to pay the whole 300 up front?

I think that you can teach some social skills, usually the ones that are general absolutes.

Isn't that a bit like learning to fish from someone who never caught a fish???????

On the other hand you never know until you try. If after a year you are in better place socially it will all have been worth it.

go for it!! !! !!

LMAO.

If you can cancel any time, and the material you've received has been helpful, I'd give it a try. The worst your out is 20 bucks.

Well, if it helps you it may worth the money. Anyway, how come 20 x 52 / 2 = 300? How much guidance and counseling are you getting per week in terms of time, depth and efficiency? Could you post an internet link?

(Btw, I've been told that I can sound a bit too formal and like a salesman through the phone :) )

It's only $20 every two weeks till the $300 is paid, as for the guidance and counseling...I have new, really Practicle information every week, and I can ask questions about NT psychology or anything else as it relates to my problems and my social coach teaches me what I need to solve my problems...I believe they are only focused on aspie males because they are focused on getting the most valuable information and giving the most Practicle help, it would lose it's relevance if they split it up I think. There is no internet link yet, they are only doing small groups right now but I asked my social coach and he said they were going to expand in the next few months, I will post a link as soon as I learn that they are taking new students...
