Does anyone know some video of high-functioning people with AS? I'm very curious to see if I find myself in them... I didn't find myself in the videos of the moderate to low functioning ones. I guess I'm needing to feel less alone in my "weirdness"...

I bet you could find vids of Temple Grandin out there. She's done plenty of public speaking. Technically, she's an autie, but in adulthood you can't tell the difference anyway, and I think she identifies more with Asperger's.

I've always found this video to be true and cynically funny--

Sorry, can't help you now. I did have a good video you might like to watch on Youtube, but for some reason it's not there any more, which is a shame because it's the sort of thing you might be looking for.

That video is great! She did such a wonderful job, what a great actress! But since she's acting all the time, I can't see her natural behavior...

Is she on WP? I'd congratulate her on the video.

I generally like the documentaries by the BBC. In my blog I linked a couple of them.

Favorited that video. It's great! And it's amazing how many of those exact phrases I've heard in just two months.

There is a movie called Mozart and the Whale, based on a true story of two Aspergians. Looks at such things as how they cope with life, getting involved in an autisic support group. Gotta warn you though, it's also a love story. Ick. But otherwise it is very good.

This video is in Dutch, but this is not the stereotypical "autistic child" or "child with Aspergers" video, but grown-up people talking about their autistic experience.
Even if you do not speak Dutch, maybe it is interesting for you just to watch their expressions?

This young woman is a high functioning person with Asperger's Syndrome. I really enjoy watching her videos.

I pulled this one out of my You Tube archives........I have more and I don't remember where this one will land........................
But, I'd give a look at all her videos. She's independent and " Gifted." See *executive dysfunction.*

To me all these people look very normal and nice, so what am I missing, guys??

I don't understand much of what the Dutch people are saying because it sounds very different from Flemish to me. But sadly the word "moeilijk" is heard often...

Nothing. :) It's like you're seeing a dyslexic guy reading a book, and he seems to be doing just fine; what you don't see is how quickly it will exhaust him, how much he has to re-read a paragraph to get it, and how many, many hours he spent on reading lessons in the past to learn how. In the short term, many Aspies can't be told from NT, because the superficial aspects of communication are things they've generally mastered by adulthood. That doesn't mean they can't have problems with skills other than those basic speaking skills (and they generally do)--they may even be generally less independent than someone whose AS is obvious from the first sentence. There's really a very wide range of possible sets of traits on the autism spectrum.

...huh. Interesting. I've never told anyone about my AS and other diagnoses outside of my immediate family, so have no experience with statements like that. Immediate family has said things mostly about OCD. Like, "everybody worries about something, who are they to say your worries are *more* than normal?". "you just need to relax." :?
