Being that the saxophone is a musical instrument, I thought I'd put this topic here.

I, for some unearthly reason, have a thing for the sound of the saxophone since I was a wee kid. Maybe it's because of its sultriness, or its silky sound, I think I love it.

Do you like the sax? And if so, what are your fave songs featuring it? I like all the 80s songs that had a sax solo in it. :D

The first thing to pop in my mind: "Careless Whispers".

The most memorable saxophone passage in 80's pop.

A little known Sheena Easton song, this song has a nice sax solo to it. :D

The sax solo starts @ 2:57.

My all time favorite use of the saxophone is on Telephone Call From Istanbul by Tom Waits. Wild and irreverent.

Here's a song that uses sax. (Yes, I'm in the band but I'm not the sax player).

The sax players in our school band were always the cool kids the girls admired...
I was a tuba player - the opposite of cool.

Is there anyone on these boards that has played/does play the saxophone? I am in the former camp; but I want to get back into it in the near future.

I have a beaten up old sax that I learned to blat out a bad version of the main melody from "Ode to Joy" by Beethoven, but I'm so bad with any musical instrument that that was about as far as I could take it.

I played alto sax for a few month in Band in sixth grade. I didn't continue due to the fact that it was a rental and my parents wouldn't shell out the couple of hundred dollars to buy the sax outright.

You can't have a thread about saxophones without this:

Yes, at various times in high school I played Tenor, Baritone and Alto sax. Today I have my own Yamaha student alto but never play it any more - mainly out of respect for my neighbors. Was never really that good considering never had any one-on-one lessons, but high school teacher told me I had a good sound on Baritone.

For sax solo's in popular music, I used to LOVE the sax solo at the opening and during the theme to LA Law:

Beyond that, over the years I've become a fan of a few saxophonists, especially the late, great Stan Getz:

Among the living, I've always liked Candy Dulfer, probably best known for this song:

I have loved the alto saxophone, the next closest one I love is the tenor.

Does anypony have advice for me when getting a sax?
