And if you look to the left of the page you'll see a great band....

Anyway I listen to a lot of Goth bands, The Chameleons......ect, hurry up and talk about something related to Goth, 'cause I can't think of anything else to put, maybe you could list some you like? Recommend some?

Yuck. I can't stand anything Gothic. Except for Tim Burton movies - I like those.

Then don't comment in here because this is about the subculture and the bands, not some director who happens to make movies that would be considered dark.

Ok, so here are some guidlines so that I might get people posting, movies will not be considered Goth, except *maybe* The Crow since it drew on Goth Culture, and The Hunger because it was so popular, Gothic Rock, Post-punk, and Deathrock will be considered Goth, but "Darkwave" and ''Electrogoth'', ect will be considered on a band by band basis, since they're so iffy.

Popular examples of Gothic Rock: Bauhaus, Sex Gang Children, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry.

Popular examples of Post-punk: Public Image Limited, The Birthday Party, Joy Division.

Popular examples of Deathrock: 45 Grave, Kommunity FK, Burning Image.

Im a slightly obsessive post punk fan
and I like early goth music and hate recent goth
I wouldnt class The Chameleons as goth at all though but they were great

if your looking for recomendations try
Cabaret Voltaire not Goth as such more early industrial inovators
some of thier early albums are fantastic particularly "2x45" and "Red Mecca"
really dark bleak stuff

early Killing Joke is quite good goth rock
thier first 5 albums are great first 2 in particular
they are a pathetic joke of a band now touring with
motley crew recently but thier first album remains one of my all
time favorites

The Fall
again not a goth band but you did mention post punk and The Fall certinly fit into that category
fronted by Mark E. Smith and with 40 ish other band members since thier formation in 1975 they are still going and have released 83 albums since thier formation
the best being "This nations saving grace"

The Pop Group
very hard to identify this group mixing post punk with Jazz,Dub and angry left wing sloganering
Their debut album "Y" was once called a glorious fairure which is quite apt not easy to listin to and some of thier stuff is muck but when it comes of its amazing like on the classic single "We are all prostitutes" a very interesting band

Gang of Four
another amazing post punk band mixing extremly funky rythms with biting stop start guitars they are one of the most copied bands of the era. Altough thier debut "Entertainment!" is the one always mentioned to prove thier greatness its follow up "Solid Gold" was almost as good

Then maybe you've gotten a bad impression because alot of people seem to be confused as to what is Goth, going so far as to claim Industrial, Death Metal, Black Metal, Gothic Metal, ect as Gothic, but they are not, and have at the very most a moderate connections.

I've heard some of Cabaret Voltaire, but I don't really like it, I like Throbbing Gristle which came even earlier, but as mentioned Industrial doesn't really belong in here.

Killing Joke deffinitly aren't a Gothic Rock band, I've always considered them Post-punk, but then again they experiment a bit.

Never heard of them but thank you for mentioning them.

Again, thank you.

Gang of Four sounds familiar to me, do they sound anything like Josef K? It's a Scottish Post-punk band.

Hmmmmm Lacimosa is pretty iffy, they've been losingn their Gothic elements with every release, never liked them though.

Not sure if I've heard of Diary of Dreams though, I'll be sure to check them out anyway though.

Yeah Lacrimosa is a bit special.. (dont know what iffy means) but im pretty sure they're goth though? *shrug*

How do you like Virgin Black, they're from Australia right? Not gothic-rock for sure but some goth elements and very talented musicians imo.

Iffy means it's hard to say, as in it's hard to say if they're music is Goth, but it certianly isn't that way anymore, and hasn't been that way for a while.

According to Wikipedia they're pretty much the same style as Lacrimosa, so they don't belong here, if you want to talk about Symphonic Metal/Gothic Doom as they're are dubbed on there you should make a Metal thread, the only Goth bands from Australia I've only ever heard of are The Birthday Party, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Thatch Noir, and Dead Can Dance, and the forth one doesn't play anything even close to Goth, they're just really popular with Goths. :roll:

If you want an idea of what Gothic Rock sounds like you'll need to listen to the video back up a few posts, if you don't like it or think it's weird, whatever, then you don't like Goth, or you could try listening to it a few more times.

The Chameleons are Post-punk and so they're a Goth band, at least, Wikipedia classifies them as Post-punk.

I really cant understand how someone who is so adamt at clasifing industrial seperate from goth concides The Chamelsons goth in fact if they were around at the time of post-punk id probably call them dream pop but then music is subjective

Josef K were far popier than GOF and far less political. Gang of Four arnt goth by any stretch but they are a very good post punk band

They chaned their style quite radicly over their carear(Going from Post-Punk to Industrial to Electro-pop to Acid House to tecno to IDM)
givin your liking for dark music I would urge you to check out thier dark period "Red Mecca" in particular should appeal to you one quote from a review sums it up well
"It's a taught, dense, horrific slab lacking a lull"

Granted your probably a yank where they werent as popular put on this side of the pond only Joy Division are more identified with the term post-punk
They have so many albums it can be a bit daunting but starting with one of the beggars banqut albums or the comp "50,000 Fall fans cant be wrong"
