last week, i was watching some videos on youtube relative to asperger's and noticed the different ways that people wanted to pronounce the word "Asperger's". one guy went as far as to explain that he didn't like the way Asperger's sounded like "ass burgers" to him and how the cartoon show 'South Park' made a show about "ass burgers".
this got me to wonder how anyone else pronounces "Asperger's".

so far, i've heard: (and these are my own rudimentary phoneticisms of the word)

Asperger's

Azberger's

Azperger's

Azburger's

Asperjer's

Ass-burgers

Ass-purger's

personally speaking, i pronounce it as "Azperger's". it seems to fit more fluidly into my pattern of speech.
How about everyone else? How do you pronounce "Asperger's"?

That depends on whether I'm speaking English or Dutch.

If it's English, I say AS-per-gur. The 'g' pronounced as in 'goal'. 'As', like the word 'as'. 'Per', like the word 'per'. Stress on the first syllable.

Before it comes up, I hardly ever employ the German pronunciation of the name. Maybe if I ever have to talk about it in German.

Edit: I pronounce the 's' unvoiced (i.e. as an 's', not as a 'z'). So I really pronounce the first syllable as 'ass'. I want to make an immature joke, but dignity prevents me.

- Asperjer's.

BUT...I'm Swedish, and, I guess, we pronounce it differently to English speaking people... :)

Mine is As-per-gers, but I sometimes find it hilarious how some people who have never heard of Asperger's Syndrome before mispronounce it as Alzheimer's.

As-Per-Guhs

I was told Austrian/German dialect pronounces their G's hard.

So, obviously they wouldn't say Guh-Many, because it's Deutschland, and so on.

Ass spur gurs.

I pretty much refuse to say the word though. I hate the term, to me it's the modern day ret*d.

It's a vague word, and it doesn't signify any real difference from HFA.
And is problably the worst sounding language in the english language.

gurspurass, spurgurass etc all sound awful. In short we shouldn't be using german words.

I always say As-per-gers syndrome. I stress the second syllable.

Like this. I was told this was correct by the first Aspie that I knowingly met. I have a compulsion for my facts to be correct (which I imagine is familiar to a lot of people here), so that's how I pronounce it even though the common way seems to be to pronounce it asperjers. Possibly it's an attempt for it not to sound like "ass burgers", but when you're talking about a person's actual name I think it's only polite to pronounce it the way they would, as best you can.
