My family just told me that I've always hugged "wrong" - meaning, when I hug it's the same pressure, same posture, same duration of time, and then suddenly releasing. It's very stiff. Anyone else hug "wrong"?

When I have to hug someone for politeness sake, I am trying not to grimace and jerk away for the most part. I need my personal space.

My sister says that I hug like a robot or like some mechanical claw. I am a bit stiff when it comes to hugs. I don't like hugs much (except for when its dogs - I like to cuddle my dog). That sucks because hugs (at least for people my age) seem to have replaced handshakes. Ugh.

I hug people very few times, and I only hug my family members. Well, they say that I hug them too tightly, and that when I do I almost choke them. That's because I can't dose my strenght.

You mean there is a whole range of different hugs?! 8O

I'm always latching on to hugs with an over/under grip (used to perform takedowns) lol and of course when hugging another male I do the back pat (like i'm hugging you but kinda hitting you too).

Apparently I am a 'rib-crusher'. I am also a 'collider' - I never know how to 'go at' people and I have gotten in to some weird tangles. Huggers freak me out.

I'm sure I definitely hug wrong. I only do it when it's expected of me (I have a real problem with touching/being touched by others) and it's usually one armed and as short as I can get away with.

I KNOW RIGHT!! ! That's what I said!! :lmao:
Since we've had this "hug range" discussion, my husband's been messing with my mind. He's hugging me at odd moments, varying postures, varying durations, etc. We laugh about it, but it's really messing with my mind!

Side thought - When my daughter was a toddler, she would push me away when I tried to cuddle with her but she wouldn't do it to my husband. We're wondering if it's because I felt too stiff, too weird.

I just freeze and let the other person do the work...

Yes, but not universally. I'm mostly among math and computer science students, who don't seem to hug that much.
But I must also have a sign on my forehead (figuratively) that states: "Don't touch me."
When we had an exchange with a French orchestra, they hugged and kissed almost everyone on cheek – except me. I'm not sure whether to be sad or happy about this.

My family still tries to hug me, though.

If I absolutely have to hug someone, I fear I do it very awkwardly. When I notice that a hug is going to take place, I think stuff like "OH GOD WHERE DO I PUT MY ARMS".

The only non-awkward hugs are with my husband and our kids. For the most part, those are the only hugs that I participate in. With anyone else, I just stand there and take it.

I think I am actually pretty good at hugging and do enjoy it.

I'm not necessarily a bad hugger. My friends say I give great hugs. But I don't think I'm a normal hugger. I've been nicknamed "Bonecrusher" because when I was younger I squeezed people way too tightly. And I very often give awkward one-armed side hugs because I'm just not sure how I'm expected to hug. Also, some folks seem to think that because I am okay with hugs then I am okay with prolonged hugs. I'm only okay with that with close family members and maybe a certain friend or two,. I have trouble not freaking out if I try to exit a hug and the other person won't let me go.
