I'm writing this now on a W8 computer. I converted from W7 back in May. I like W8 because a lot of needed 3rd party programs are built right in, and it's stable as hell. Every so often I have an error with the video drivers, but it resolves itself soon after.

I have not found the new user interface to be much use, not being a touchscreen user. World of Tanks works great. I believe there may be improvements to remote desktop which will be of use eventually, when my hardware catches up( RemoteFX).

A good advice is to stay with Windows 7 until at least the first service pack of Windows 8 is released.

Windows XP. I'm on Windows 7 and it's alright. Windows 8 looks more ugly than Vista, why fix something that's not broke? They purposely make it like that, to build up the next one whatever it is.

A new Operating System typically requires that your external devices, such as printers, get new drivers. You may need a new printer that is Windows 8 compatible.

This point is moot in this regard. Microsoft tends to include basic drivers for most common hardware available at release. Also, the Windows-API is supposed to be backward compatible (Including most of the WDM/WDK-API), which means most Windows 7 drivers should work on Windows 8 without any fuzz.

This is good news if you are migrating from a Windows 7 system to Windows 8. Somehow, I don't think that my old XP hardware that doesn't work with Win 7 will magically work with Win 8, though I'd be pleasantly surprised if it did. :D

Even if you do have a driver, the XP software provided by the manufacturer of the printer that worked so well with your printer may not run under Win 7/Win 8.

Yes, well, migrating from Windows XP could be a problem if your hardware is old and no longer supported by the manufacturer.

It's probably not a problem, yet I do not have this system., If it is similar to Windows 7 drivers could be downloaded by Windows Update

It is no longer 1999. I would expect and hope Windows 8 can run XP printer drivers.

I never understood printer drivers though. Why is it so hard for a printer to just receive PostScript data and do its thing?

I f*****g hate the W8 user interface! Also, my dad installed it and now he has trouble with hardware device detection that he never had on W7. I'm sticking with W7. Microsoft created a dud with the new OS.

I haven't used Windows 8, but from what I've seen, it doesn't look that great, while Windows 7 (which is what I'm using) has been my favorite Windows OS so far. Windows 8 looks like it's for an iPhone.

as aspies we usually hate change to begin with but i still think w8 is garbage. How long until the first service pac of windows 8 gets released an how do i know if my laptop will have that when i buy it?

A Service Pack isn't going to resolve this. Stick with 7 or wait for 9.
