Claim that it is just a myth and that you don't really have it? I used to. I would hate it if people said that I had it.

No one has ever asked, so I've never had to deny it.

Asperger's Syndrome a myth? No ... but there are many myths attached to it, and those myths I will refute.

This is not to say that I won't continue to "stay in the closet" about being an Aspie.

People usually don't believe that I have Asperger's, either, and I tend not to "announce" it to the world unless I need to.

But as for denying it? No. I spent all of my teenage years searching for something to describe my issues, something that could help people understand, something that said "I'm not just doing this on purpose" or "see it's not just me". If anything, learning that I'm an Aspie has enriched my life.

The symptoms and issues I deal with aren't that great, but they've enabled me to meet some great, logical people. 8) Plus, even if you deny it, it wouldn't make you a neurotypical, right?

I have never denied I have Asperger's. Asperger's is who I am, and I am grateful for it.

Glider, I know it's a bit off topic, but I do not understand the phrase "Asperger's is who I am". Would you be willing to further explain?

A big part of who I am is centered around my special intense interests that have been brought about by Asperger's. Most people relate to me because of these interests. I am also a talent savant in music that has been brought about by Asperger's. Music makes up a huge part of who I am. As I progress through my day, I am often absorbed into one of my interests. Without autism, I would not be who I am. I am largely driven by my interests from autism.

Thank you for explaining, and I think that is really great.

Yeah. And its called denial. That's one of the reason I have no social life today. I really wouldn except it. Felt like such a failure being broken.

It can be very hard to accept that you are sick or handicapped

I've never denied having autism, but I don't come out and tell everyone. I don't mind telling people about it though if the occasion arises.

Maybe I will deny next time that someone asks, then I can act increasingly autistic while all the time denying that I am autistic, and I dunno why, for fun?

Not a single soul has asked me, and I haven't announced it to any other soul! I pretty much was until now, when I'm just kinda secretive about it. If anyone asks I'll be forced to admit it, but otherwise I keep a low profile about it.

I have never denied having it when asked if I had it. Plus no one in real life has really asked me if I had it except for my aspie mate. Sometimes I still want to deny it.

I have many times denied that I had problems with depression. or accepted the depression but denied the severity. ditto anxiety and especially ditto OCD. I made a point of telling my psychiatrist, when I first became her patient, that I thought she was wrong about suggesting I had OCD. That first day, she said to me "We [her and the resident she was training] don't think you have OCD, but please fill out this screening test". Few months later when I did the whole neuropsych testing ordeal, whole different clinical psychologist slapped that Dx on me right along with the AS one.

Now part of that was a misunderstanding on my part about what OCD actually entails in contrast to my ignorant pop-culture based previous 'understanding' of the disorder.

As for autism spectrum, that one I cannot deny. Mood stuff I can rationalize around and try telling myself that I don't have problems, but the AS stuff, that simply is and has always been.

I have never denied it if anyone asks me about it (why should I?), but I have sometimes wished that I didn't have it when things have gotten tough. Then I realised that wishing it away would mean I would lose a big part of my mind and personality.
