IMO, you had best be a very hard core Floyd fan. Ummagumma is nothing like any other album they've released. It contains four compositions each by one member of the band. As such, each of them is very different from most other Floyd compositions, but does give you an idea of the individual mentalities behind Floyd. That LP is the reason I bought David Gilmore's solo albums, but never bought any solo albums from the other three. (Even though I love the Roger Waters piece, "Grantchester Meadows.")
If you're really into exploring the individual members musical mentalities, and development of Floyd's style over the years, Ummagumma us a good way to do that, but it's only a start. If you really want to explore it deeply, invest in the first two LP's (Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and Saucerful of Secrets). And if your'e going to bother to do that, be sure to get all of Syd Barrett's music too.
Syd was an unbelievable genius.
