Is UmmaGumma a good Pink Floyd album?

I want to buy it, I just want to hear other people's opinions on it.

I've listened to it before. Can't say I was thrilled. I do like Pink Floyd, though. My favorites from them are The Wall, Dark Side, Wish You Were Here and Animals.

It's worth it for the live disc. A lot of people have mixed feelings about the studio disc.

If you like weird trippy music and random sound effects and things like that then yeah. Theres a concert or remake of older songs by them disk though that might just be the case with the one I got.....I like it anyways, but yeah the main disk or whatever is certainly interesting I like it but not all the time especially if I am really on edge, its hard enough trying to stay in 'reality' when that happens.

It is probably one of their weirdest albums.

IMO, you had best be a very hard core Floyd fan. Ummagumma is nothing like any other album they've released. It contains four compositions each by one member of the band. As such, each of them is very different from most other Floyd compositions, but does give you an idea of the individual mentalities behind Floyd. That LP is the reason I bought David Gilmore's solo albums, but never bought any solo albums from the other three. (Even though I love the Roger Waters piece, "Grantchester Meadows.")

If you're really into exploring the individual members musical mentalities, and development of Floyd's style over the years, Ummagumma us a good way to do that, but it's only a start. If you really want to explore it deeply, invest in the first two LP's (Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and Saucerful of Secrets). And if your'e going to bother to do that, be sure to get all of Syd Barrett's music too.

Syd was an unbelievable genius.

The live disc is great. I sometimes wonder if it's there to soothe the people who went "WTF?" at the studio disc, which pretty well divides opinion. It's odd in parts, weird in others, experimental even, but this was made in the sixties don't forget.

I have 7 of their albums already, Animals, Atom Heart Mother, Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, The Final Cut, The Wall, The Dark Side of the Moon, and Meddle. I also have Syd Barrett's solo album, The Madcap Laughs, which is great.

If you like them all, you will love Ummagumma, I'm almost positive. Buy it.

You might also want to try Syd Barrett's "Barrett". The version of the DVD I have has a lot of the original song cuts on it before they over produced the songs to try to make pop hits out of it.

I have all of Floyds albums, but to be honest I think this and Atom Mother Heart are the ones I listen to the least. The live disk is ok, but I've always thought of this album as their teething stage following the exit of Sid. The Several Small Species video above is by far the worst thing they have ever recorded, It's hard to attribute any musical value to it whatsoever. I prefer anything from Meddle onwards, but I guess it's all really down to personal preference.
