With the demise of the Start button, I'm still not clear how users are intended to get to all the (traditional) programs etc that have formerly been accessed via the Start button. I'm not talking about the newfangled Windows 8 "apps"; nor about using the proliferation of third-party Start programs.
Each time Microsoft launch a new operating system promising it is quicker and easier to use than the previous I generally find the opposite to be true with features I commonly use buried deeper and deeper in the operating system.
A guy gave me a demonstration of Windows 8 on a laptop in a shop today but he wasn't overly knowledgeable about it either. As he explained it, you put shortcut icons to your traditional programs on your desktop which is accessed via a desktop tile. However, looking at my existing Start menu there are literally hundreds of programs, read-me files, licences, tools etc, most of which I rarely access, but the question is ... can you still access rarely used programs etc without putting shortcuts to them all on the desktop first? I wouldn't want a desktop to have hundreds of icons on it! If so how many clicks does it take to do this (the Microsoft recommended way)?
