With the demise of the Start button, I'm still not clear how users are intended to get to all the (traditional) programs etc that have formerly been accessed via the Start button. I'm not talking about the newfangled Windows 8 "apps"; nor about using the proliferation of third-party Start programs.

Each time Microsoft launch a new operating system promising it is quicker and easier to use than the previous I generally find the opposite to be true with features I commonly use buried deeper and deeper in the operating system.

A guy gave me a demonstration of Windows 8 on a laptop in a shop today but he wasn't overly knowledgeable about it either. As he explained it, you put shortcut icons to your traditional programs on your desktop which is accessed via a desktop tile. However, looking at my existing Start menu there are literally hundreds of programs, read-me files, licences, tools etc, most of which I rarely access, but the question is ... can you still access rarely used programs etc without putting shortcuts to them all on the desktop first? I wouldn't want a desktop to have hundreds of icons on it! If so how many clicks does it take to do this (the Microsoft recommended way)?

yes, you can either start typing the name of the program and it autosearches to the program. Or you can right click and click "show all apps" which will show first all your win8 apps followed by an alphabetical list of x86/64 programs.

And to use control panel, run, cmd and all that stuff just right click on where the start button in the desktop. A right click window will pop up with all the options you always had for the start menu

Windows 8 isn't really designed to run non-Metro apps, they "don't fit in".

Either install Start8 or a similar program, or go back to Windows 7.

its perfectly designed. You just have to understand its a new approach to going through the system. Its actually easier to use than any previous windows.

I don't suffer from a lack of understanding.

...maybe... once people (like myself) stop trying to do things they way we always have and start this all-new system from scratch!

I hope there are some good tutorials out there!

I run few programs on Win8, and have pinned them to the taskbar. Finding the programs is not easy. I had to drill down through the file system looking for Visual Studio and the control panel. If you ever get a program pinned to the taskbar, you're fine.

PowerDesk does not run on Win8. Massive bummer. It has a great file launcher.
