We are all just autistic now. Of course, we already were but that is a whole other debate...

Sincerely,
Matthew

The headline implies a different message than the body text of the article. I take no issue with the article as written. I suppose the use of the word "dropped" in the headline is intended to be incendiary in order to pull in more readers. Standard media practice.

It makes perfect sense to me. Autism is a general diagnosis, aspergers is a specific diagnosis, allowing for more precise treatment methods. There's no harm whatsoever in breaking down a spectrum into component parts to help with treatment.

How the deuce is removing a specification for a spectrum of order in any way helping accuracy of diagnosis?! Makes no Gorram sense!

I'm more wondering how the deuce an autism diagnosis of any shape or form in any way correlates with mental illness.

ABC just lost any credibility in my eyes.

Very true. I don't suspect many people with autism will be dropping it themselves, I see nothing wrong with anyone wanting to be specific with their diagnosis.

It isn't something you can just "drop" and adapt to the changes made by a minority of health officials, adamant that their opinions are superior to all.

to be honest, i probably by rights should have been diagnosed with aspergers but my psychologist gave me a high functioning autism diagnosis instead, probably in foresight of this change. That was back in January.

So?

The site describes that as "abnormally bad and frequent temper tantrums".
You need a lot more symptoms than that to be diagnosed with any form of autism.

Yes, the lengthy review process was equivalent to "just waving a wand".

Same people, different label. Unless I'm missing something and the DSM-V revisions are going to turn us all into rabid hyenas or something.

While not a mental illness autism is clearly a neurological disorder. It isn't just difference, it is an illness.

I guess I will just now refer to it as Autism or ASD... my diagnoses was aspergers/ASD.

It does somewhat influence us badly... is it because of the "Ass burgers" political incorrectness?

I'm not sure that I carried my point so well...I was very miffed when I first read that article.

YES, I know before I had Aspergers Disorder which is on the Autism Spectrum. Now they're dropping the Aspergers part. Now, at the age of 46 I can only (by Dr's deffinition) say "I'm Autistic" & can't really say I have this identified problem of Aspergers Disorder (because Aspergers Disorder is no longer "recognized" by 'the powers that be')

edited to add: y'all know that all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are square...to me this whole dropping Aspergers just muddies up the water & is un-focusing the problem for those of us who have Aspergers (I'll probably ALWAYS say that I have Aspergers...ya' know: a rose by any other name & all that jazz.)
