http://theaspergersavenger.blogspot.com/The Asperger's Avenger

After an absence of years, I have returned to blogging. My new blog is about what it's like living as a "mostly functional but constantly at-risk" adult with Asperger's. It's not a blog for the weak of heart. It's a blog very much inspired by my punk rock roots, particularly the "not caring who I offend" aspect. My goal with this blog is to take all the negatives I feel in my life right now and somehow turn them into positives while still staying true to myself and my worldview. I'm not the most upbeat, and this is not exactly an upbeat blog, but I am looking for solidarity, and thought that I would drop a plug for it here, in this forum, which is dedicated to in-depth adult life discussion. I'm looking to give Asperger's a human face that's not a stereotype; at the same time, I am in all honesty a very dark person. I'm very cynical, and pessimistic, and my blog reflects that while at the same trying to challenge that paradigm and offer hope- one of those I kinda feel sick saying.

Please check out my blog and feel free to comment. I'm hoping I can make it and influence other people this way.

-Barry/Zarathustra

I just read the post where you say: "... I don't particularly care to hear your success stories... especially if you're women, since women get a free pass in a lot of areas of life that men don't, Asperger's included."

Now, this really pisses me off! Being bullied every day in school, being unemployed for ages and having a hard time finding a boyfriend (even though I have my looks to my advantage) is not my idea of a 'free pass'! Show some respect!

^ You are absolutely right. I was extremely angry when I wrote that. I'm extremely angry a lot of the time and that line that you point out is very demeaning indeed. I apologize for it.

While I don't think I've gotten a free pass being a woman, I will admit my life likely would have been harder if I were a guy with the same issues/ brain/ personality I currently have. & I think I might have been more prone to violence (no offense to guys here).

I will check out your blog!

OK, I just read your last entry and here are my thoughts. You're very depressed right now so don't make any big decisions. You mention suicide. I agree this isn't a cowardly act, but, the truth is most people choose suicide when they are profoundly depressed and thus not thinking clearly. So while it may not be a cowardly act, it IS a confused act, based on a loss of perspective, in most cases.

As far as your embarrassing issue you mention, I can assure you that a significant percentage of the world probably has something even more embarrassing or gross... that's just how people are. Human sexuality is irrational through and through. I don't know if you've ever watched "My Strange Addiction" but there was once a guy who was sexually aroused by fishing clumps of rotting hair out of strangers' shower drains.

So please don't beat yourself up. If you can just endure the depression for a while longer you will eventually feel better, but right now you just have to push through it and hang in there. It may sound trite, but it's true!
