I am curious as to whether anyone has come across anything that relates 'Synesthesia' to Asperger's?

I'm just beginning to explore the world of Asperger's, only recently discovered the possibility I may be an Aspy (166), so I am looking to connect the dots with other aspects of myself that I am aware of.

Thanks!

I don't know so far.

I would like to know, though, because I have a lot of synesthetic experiences.

I am certainly under the impression that there can be an association, but have not read that it is definitive (and they can occur independently of one another).

Having said that, I definitely see a connection and higher incidence in aspies.

I remenber having read somewhere that synesthesia is correlated with impressive memory skills, which would imply a high prevalence of synesthesia among autism/asperger. personnally I don't have it though.

There exist no scientifically evidence for a correlation as yet, but preliminary studies have shown a higher incidence of synesthesia in autism spectrum disorders than for the normal population.

From a philosophical perspective synesthesia is something which happen in all people and to such an extent that one may term many types normal. Other synesthetic phenomenoms may be rather deviant and may be what are seen more often in some disorders as autism spectrum disorders.

Have it - it's not exclusive, but there is a connection.

Which article is the synesthesia one out of the link? There are several, they all look interesting though.

When i was younger i had several instances of Synesthesia of which i would smell a smell that i always automatically associated with abandoned mental hospitals.
I have smelled the smell various occasions at random different places, including not smelling it at an abandoned hospital and also smelling it at a different one. (Urban explorer)
At the time i told my psychologist (he was awesome!) and he said it was Synesthesia.

Chloe33,that is not synasthesia; it is an olfactory hallucination. However, o.h.s are neurological issues like Asperger's, so there may be some connection.

I have mirror-touch synesthesia.
