Quote:
(Reuters) - The U.S. Department of Homeland Security urged computer users to disable Oracle Corp's Java software, amplifying security experts' prior warnings to hundreds of millions of consumers and businesses that use it to surf the Web.

Hackers have figured out how to exploit Java to install malicious software enabling them to commit crimes ranging from identity theft to making an infected computer part of an ad-hoc network of computers that can be used to attack websites.

"We are currently unaware of a practical solution to this problem," the Department of Homeland Security's Computer Emergency Readiness Team said in a posting on its website late on Thursday.

"This and previous Java vulnerabilities have been widely targeted by attackers, and new Java vulnerabilities are likely to be discovered," the agency said. "To defend against this and future Java vulnerabilities, disable Java in Web browsers."

Oracle declined on Friday to comment on the warning.

Java is a computer language that enables programmers to write software utilizing just one set of code that will run on virtually any type of computer, including ones that use Microsoft Corp's Windows, Apple Inc's OS X and Linux, an operating system widely employed by corporations.

Computer users access Java programs through modules, or plug-ins, that run Java software on top of browsers such as Internet Explorer and Firefox.

The U.S. government's warning on Java came after security experts warned on Thursday of the newly discovered flaw.

It is relatively rare for government agencies to advise computer users to completely disable software due to a security bug, particularly in the case of widely used programs such as Java. They typically recommend taking steps to mitigate the risk of attack while manufacturers prepare an update, or hold off on publicizing the problem until an update is prepared.

In September, the German government advised the public to temporarily stop using Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser to give it time to patch a security vulnerability that opened it to attacks.

Java is so widely used that the software has become a prime target for hackers. Last year Oracle's Java surpassed Adobe Systems Inc's Reader software as the most frequently attacked piece of software, according to security software maker Kaspersky Lab.

Java was responsible for 50 percent of all cyber attacks last year in which hackers broke into computers by exploiting software bugs, according Kaspersky. That was followed by Adobe Reader, which was involved in 28 percent of all incidents. Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer were involved in about 3 percent of incidents, according to the survey.

The Department of Homeland Security said attackers could trick targets into visiting malicious websites that would infect their PCs with software capable of exploiting the bug in Java.

It said an attacker could also infect a legitimate website by uploading malicious software that would infect machines of computer users who trust that site because they have previously visited it without experiencing any problems.

They said developers of several popular tools, known as exploit kits, which criminal hackers use to attack PCs, have added software that allows hackers to exploit the newly discovered bug in Java to attack computers.

Security experts have been scrutinizing the safety of Java since a similar security scare in August, which prompted some of them to advise using the software only on an as-needed basis.

At the time they advised businesses to allow their workers to use Java browser plug-ins only when prompted for permission by trusted programs such as GoToMeeting, a Web-based collaboration tool from Citrix Systems Inc.

Java suffered another setback in October when Apple began removing old versions of the software from Internet browsers of Mac computers when its customers installed new versions of its OS X operating system. Apple did not provide a reason for the change and both companies declined to comment at the time.

Adam Gowdiak, a researcher with Polish security firm Security Explorations, told Reuters he believes that Oracle fails to properly test its software fixes for security flaws. "It's definitely safer for users to stay away from Java 'til Oracle starts taking security seriously," he said.

Anybody taking this seriously?

This site is annoyingly broken without Java enabled.

I totally forgot about this story.

This is a serious issue, but also a pain in the ass.

Another reason for my mental list of reasons for a mac. I use chrome now and this has reminded me why I'm seeing so much targeted advertising for tennis shoes.

Thanks.

My plan is to disable it in general with some exceptions.

It doesn't matter which OS you're running, if you're using Java 7 Update 10, you're vulnerable.

Don't confuse Javascript with Java, the site works perfectly fine without Java. I don't think it uses Java anywhere.

My (Windows) computer came with Java pre-installed. I gather this is normal. However, due to all the ongoing fuss about Java vulnerabilities and the lack of urgency in fixing them I uninstalled Java a couple of years ago. Only hit a couple of websites that needed Java for their functionality since, but they weren't important to me.

Java seems like something best uninstalled rather than updated. It appears to be more of a liability than of any real use/value.

Ahh... I did disable javascript along with two actual java plugins...

Although...I thought I'd read something about malicious scripts too. :?

Anyways.... I wonder if all this has something to do with that Iranian hacker group (click) attacking US Banks the other day?

"They employed DDoS attacks[...]"
So no, it wasn't a hack at all, and completely unrelated to this.
A DRDoS could've been more interesting, but it seems like they just rented servers and used them to DDoS..

^^^ Well, I was thinking more along the lines of them using the java vulnerability to construct a botnet.... but rented servers will work too.

i like java and its a shame it has to be like this. I love how you can write a program in java and it can run on almost any computer. unlike C++ you have to compile the program for each Operating System <_<

I use a Windows XP. YouTube's video buffering started to suffer a moment before the latest java update came up. I updated it so things would get better and coincidentally they did. Now I hear this.

I don't know how to uninstall Java so please help. I'm currently using FireFox with adblocker running.

If I uninstall Java, how will it affect the following websites I go to?

This one

YouTube

Manga reading sites

Gamefaqs

Code Junkies

Silent Hill Wiki

Wikipedia

If going to these sites will never be the same without Java, is there an alternative to Java?

The Java VM is not the only use for Java, and I personally don't understand why it's still apparently so widely installed as a browser plugin (the <APPLET> tag was deprecated and removed quite some time ago). I rarely see Java applets on the web unless it's some ass-backward corporate intranet app in which case they're pretty common (or apparently banking in Denmark uses it). It's not like any popular websites I'm aware of think "we need to add some dynamic stuff here... what should we use? Of couse, let's use a Java applet". Nobody uses it, it has a perceptibly long startup time, it doesn't integrate with HTML, and it presents a target surface the size of Alaska for hackers. If I ran corporate IT for some organization, I would ban it.

Java is used in numerous other ways, and a lot of people like it as a language although I'm a little iffy on it at best. I would have been happy if it had been the standard for scripting dynamic HTML, as opposed to JavaScript, but I guess it just wasn't convenient enough. Web developers are not used to having a build step.

I may be wrong, but I think you are confusing Java with JavaScript. They are entirely different. I uninstalled Java a couple of years ago and haven't had any problems with the exception of one government site in the UK.
My computer still runs JavaScript under Firefox but it is regulated by the NoScript add-on so I can selectively choose which sites are allowed to run JavaScript code in my browser.

As I recall you need to go into Programs... uninstall a program and you should see Java listed there. Java seems to be much more of a liability than a benefit nowadays.

So without Java, it won't affect how I visit any of the websites I listed too much? Also be specific. I'm running a Windows XP (downgraded by the way) and I don't know a lot about what's on there since it was pre-owned plus I'm more used to Windows Vista since I do most of my video recording activities there. I went to Start-All Programs and Java is not there even though it was updated yesterday and there is no Uninstall either.

Never mind. A news article about homeland security still urging users to disable Java on NBC.com gave a link to instructions. Everything is good now...but for how long?

I read a technical article yesterday stating that Java has so many unpatched security flaws it would take around two years for all the bugs to be fixed, during which time more critical security flaws will likely be found. I think the will has gone to take Java forward; it is gradually slipping into obsolescence.
