Quote:
'No such thing as Falkland islanders', says Argentine foreign minister
  • There is no such thing as Falkland islanders, the Argentine foreign minister has insisted, claiming they are British citizens living in disputed islands
Hector Timerman claimed the United Nations only acknowledges two parties in the territorial disputet - the UK and Argentina.

Speaking at a press conference in central London today, Mr Timerman said: "The Falklands islanders do not exist. What exists is British citizens who live in the Islas Malvinas.

"The United Nations does not recognise a third party in the conflict. It says there are just two parts - the UK and Argentina."

The Falkland Islanders do exist. They are the indigenous inhabitants of the Islands that have lived there for nearly 200 years. They have their own flag, their own parliament and self-government, their own newspapers, their own police force, their own radio station and their own currency. The Falkland Islands claim is not taken seriously by anyone other than a few tinpot Spanish-speaking countries in South America and a couple of anti-British former colonies in Africa and other dictatorships and terrorist organisations. There would be absolutely no problem in relations between the Falkland Islands and Argentina if their government would not persist with this ludicrous and specious claim over another people's land.

The Argentine government can go to hell. It'll be nice and warm there - even warmer than it used to be, apparently, due to global warming.

Desire the right.

Every time the Argentine government comments on the Falklands they look more and more out of touch with reality. They need to focus on their own country and stop trying to divert their citizens attention with this expansionist nonsense

Well, he is correct about the UN.

Since the Falkland Islands does not have jurisidiction over foreign affairs, it has no standing in international law to be a party to the dispute between the United Kingdom and Argentina. The interests of Falklanders are properly within the protection of the United Kingdom.

But the fact that he is correct about that is irrelevant, because he conveniently fails to take note the UN's ongoing support for self-determination. Just because the United Kingdom is the only state party to the dispute does not invalidate the political opinion of the 3,000 British citizens resident on the islands.

Exactly - and what do you think the United Kingdom is going to say during any talks?

All they're going to say is "we respect the wishes of the inhabitants of the islands, and at the moment they wish for the Falkland Islands to remain an overseas territory of the United Kingdom".

He's not going to get anywhere, for there is nowhere for him to go. The UK case is solid. The Argentinian case is very shaky at best.
