Lol, I'd been thinking about asking people on this one for a while but was a bit shy on making a band post - so thanks DrowningMedusa, I needed that initiative :P. I wanted to post this just out of curiosity because I frankly can't think of any aspies I've ever known who say anything about em and I've never seen em pop up on the listening threads aside from my own posts.

So I have to ask, have any of you heard anything by these guys past the stuff like Wrong Way, What I got, and all the overplayed radio stuff? I really didn't get into them back when they first came out just because - I was a grunge/skater kid at that age and was all about my Suicidal Tendencies, Janes Addiction, Alice In Chains, Pantera, stuff like that. Like Tool though, once I had a friend who was really into em and was able to relay who they were in a really intelligent way I was hooked.

With Sublime I notice a lot of things. One thing for certain is that Brad Nowell had a LOT of talent, particularly with genre bending. When he had tracks that went from raggae to ska to sort of thrashy punk he did it not only seemlessly but he made it all sound pretty authentic at least to an extent rather than really watering down all elements like a lot of artists would. Like with the Scarlet Begonia's cover he does a good job of keeping that with the whole psychedellic rock bit but at the end he fades into some Jamaican stuff that reminds me a lot of what was playing in Belly when Tommy (DMX) was rolling up to Ox's crib in Jamaica estates and they were trying to introduce that character. They also really understood trip effects, like on Work That We Do, its really washed out, Brad's voice comes out from under a lot of reverbs and effects and it peaks and falls out here and there, lots of really sick string bounce effects as well. Also of course I love the fact that there's a lot grime in the lyrics, Brad wasn't only very real about the lyrics but he summoned up and energy with them that really drives the point home. He also does something where he builds power off the lyrics by having a real almost...don't know if this is the right term for it...but euphemistic way of phrasing the lyrics with the music, when artists do that it makes their tunes just sound hard as hell and I can't get enough of it. That euphemism also kinda shows who he was, very creative and very spiritual but definitely had a bully streak at least for anyone who messed with him or his (Get Ready, Stepping Razor, etc.) but its presented from a different angle and with an all together a different type of energy than I've ever really heard manifested in music other than rap and hardcore metal - both of which do it a lot differently and those sorts or artists are usually almost shouting out challenges at some particular person who's listening to their cd rather than just straight up trying to immerse you in their headspace and how they think and feel (again, anything that's a portal into someone's head that's articulated that well , in my mind, is the ish). The more I think about it that's a common thread I think I can draw between 3 bands that I've actually found myself being really into - Alice In Chains, Tool, and these guys: very immersive and emotionally intense artists (kinda like me and what I'm aiming for with my d&b :P).

I've been probably listening to Sublime - Gold at least once a day now and I do like some of the tracks off Sublime self-titled like Get Ready, Jail House, April 29 1992, and Garden Grobe, but most of what I'm really into is off the other 2 cds - Don't Push, Slow Ride, Lets Go Get Stoned (lame title but its a sick track), Badfish, Waiting for my Ruka (really cool minimal and depressive quality), 40 oz to Freedom, We're Only Gonna Die From Our Own Arrogance, 5446 (goes all over the place again, shows that Brad can pull that off with class and a LOT of feeling), Scarlet Begonias, Right Back, Stepping Razor, Greatest Hits, Work That We Do of course, Cisco Kid (old radio show chopped up in it, very catchy) - lol, think I got my point across.

All the same though, when you listen to the non-selftitled stuff I think they earned their name. So am I the only aspie here who's friends do enough drugs or are there other people here too who get where they were coming from?

That's really interesting....have I found a band that aspies really don't listen to here? For me its just been strange, almost every guy friend I have has been in to em to one degree or another, almost every girl I've dated I found out in one way or another was into em...I'd think this would be more common...

I'm not really into Sublime, but yeah, I hear 'em once in a while...decent band. I like the genre-bending routine (punk, ska, etc.) and the slice-o-life lyrics.

I think they're overrated, but I might just think that because they played them all the time at the sh***y college parties I went to.

Yeah, I kinda felt that way about Pearl Jam, they had a bit of emotion to their music but it really wasn't my cup of tea so to speak and people acted like they were the greatest thing out there. With Sublime though I'd compare their radio play with Jane's Addiction, in the later case Caught Stealing and Jane Says doesn't even touch the quality of most of the stuff on Nothings Shocking or Ritual De Lo Habitual. If you've heard them at parties though I'm guessing you've probably heard Garden Grobe and 40 Oz to Freedom at least a dozen times. For me it took years to really get into these guys just because what I had heard never really hit me off the right angle, now all of a sudden its just happened on its own somehow - funny how that works...

I don't practice santeria
I ain't got no crystal ball.
I had a million dollars but i'd,
I'd spend it all.
If I could find that heina and that sancho that she's found,
Well I'd pop a cap in sancho and I'd slap her down.

Hehehe.......can't help but like that song!

The other thing I can't help thinking about, next time I'm out at a bar and everyone's doing karaoki (my friends are great for putting the pressure on with that) I'm really thinking about looking through the book to see if they have Slow Ride by Sublime. If you've ever heard that track I don't know but something makes me think its one of those songs that would drive every girl in the place absolutely wild, especially if you sung it with as much feeling as Brad did.

So I'm dragging up this old thread because I AM AN ASPIE WHO LOVES SUBLIME.

I blame my workplace. 'Caress Me Down' plays on the company radio a lot, and from the first time I heard it I loved it. So I downloaded it. And loved it some more.

Still my favorite by them.

I have since listened to their other songs and albums. I've yet to purchase them all, but it's definitely something I plan on doing.

Here's something for ya - have you ever heard of Pepper? I hadn't till recently, have some friends trying to sell me on them (from what I've had a chance to hear they've got a little bit of Sublime influence, some Chili Peppers). I haven't had a chance to hear a lot by them but this tune's got a little quality ambiance going on:

Wow I haven't listened to Sublime in years... They do indeed have a bunch of good stuff outside the singles and stuff (I also think compared to most bands their singles are actually really good, they just, as people said, have a weird vibe now cause they're so played out). I never got super "into" Sublime but I've liked them since I was like 14.

I actually think I like their self-titled the best, although 40oz to Freedom is awesome too... My favorite song of theirs by far is Jailhouse.

Definitely Sublime & Chili Peppers influence. To me it actually sounds like Anthony Kiedis singing with Sublime doing the music!

I've seen Pepper listed as one of Sublime's similar artists on last.fm. I'll check them out.

Same in the end is awesome, that's probably #2 for me after Jailhouse

The record 40 oz. to Freedom always reminded me of Pavement gone ska-punk. Same blend of postmodern music-about-music and irreverence.
