Luckily for you, I have seen many anime in my day and I'd be more than happy to give suggestions! (just be warned that most of the shows on this list are extremely dark and disturbing)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Steins;Gate
Neon Genesis Evangelion (the original 26 episode TV series + the sequel movie, End of Evangelion)
Elfen Lied
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (and its sequel series, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai)
Blue Exorcist
Black Butler
Hellsing Ultimate
Trinity Blood

If you want to watch some less dark stuff, I'd recommend Rurouni Kenshin and/or Inuyasha.

Sailor Moon. The new series reboot is coming out this year, so familiarizing yourself with the original would be a good thing. :)

I recommend watching the subtitled Japanese version rather than the English dubs. Granted, I wouldn't have known about its existence without the dubbed version, but there is a world of difference--the English dub leaves out several episodes.

Others:

Inuyasha
Yu Yu Hakusho
Fullmetal Alchemist
Paranoia Agent (prepare yourself for a total Mind Screw with that one).

Also: not really anime, but the live-action Sailor Moon (known as Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon) was surprisingly good. It has Power Rangers-style production values, but the acting is really done well.

Enjoy!

Blood+ is a good one if you're into drama with a mix of fantasy. It's very gory and disturbing, and a few episodes left me in tears due to the emotion build up.

You could also try Kaze No Stigma too, but for some reason I never really liked it.

Currently watching one called Needless, but it's more on the vulgar side of anime. It has a good storyline, though. It can be predictable at times, but there are other times when my head is left reeling at figuring out what will happen next.

I'd back up Black Butler as well. It's a jolly good show. :P They have a little sequel series, but that one has a lot of much darker tones and themes while the first one was more like devilish fun.

Fullmetal Alchemist has my favorite story line (I also own the manga). It has an even blend of jokes and seriousness, and the main character himself is pretty funny (and short). I'd say that it would be like a magical b movie.

I'm currently watching Mawaru Penguindrum; GREAT show so far.

Others I like consist of the bakemonogatari franchise, and Arakawa under the bridge.

EDIT: Just finshed Penguindrum

WATCH IT NOW o_o

I could recomend so much

Since your user name is ZombieBrideXD, maybe I could recomend zombie anime:

Sankarea is an interesting anime about a boy who only likes zombies, through events involving him trying to bring back his cat a girl turns into a zombie. Despite its zombie theme it is largely about the girls isolation despite her rich upbringing, it is all rather sweet.

Is This Really a Zombie? (Kore wa Zombie Desuka?), guy dies, guy gets brought back by mute necromance, guy meets magical, guy becomes magical girl, from there is gets crazy. It is a very funny series with always some random turn, dark humor, action, and some ecchi, since you saw Kiss X Sis you should be fine with that last bit.

You also metioned some shoujo titles (ouran high and Fruits basket), for that I might recomend:

My Little Monster (Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun), very highly thought of, especially for the begining that felt like an entire story in itself. Also great because it is about characters who are socially awkward, some characters that might even fit certain disaorders.

Pandora Hearts, a spin on the Alice in Wonderland tale, a mystery anime filled with monsters and cool fights.

And what I recomend because I feel like it:

GJ-bu, is one of my favourite current airing anime with the last episode comming out next week. It is a cute and funny moe show often with the club girls lightly teasing the guy, and sometimes the other way around.

Haiyore! Nyarko-san, becaus the crawling chaos in the form of a High school girl, and does references is hilarious. This gem of moral standards is also getting its second season soon.

I would like to recommend a very underrated anime/manga called "Yakitate!! Japan"

I warn you, the description sounds boring... but it's SO hilarious.

Its about a teenage boy who loves making bread, and there is German bread, French bread, and English bread, but no Japan bread, so he decides he needs to invent it. The anime unfortunately could never be dubbed because the show relies so much on puns. Even the name of the series/bread... in Japanese, "Pan" is bread, so to them it's "Ja-bread"

Anyway the bread he makes is so good that people have "reactions" to it, and the reactions are just hilarious. I highly recommend it!

Sayonara Zestubou Sensei

Just started.

Many laughs.

Back to anime.

@ Zodai

If you like Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, based on also likeing Bakemonogatari I would recomend checking out other SHAFT anime. Their latest anime is Sasami-san@Ganbaranai, comes off as really random but surprisingly actually had a deep plot.

Or also Joshiraku, it is by the same auther as SZS and has some similar themes, though not as dark, it is interesting as a number of people said it was a very funny show, but the jokes are also very Japanese and require some knowledge of the culture, or being able to learn a little.

Has it been subtitled in English?

Can't believe I forgot about Hetalia. *facepalm*

It's basically a stereotypical (almost racist) anime where the main characters are personified countries. It's pretty hilarious. xD

Here's an episode from season 5:

Patlabor. Mech anime that takes place in the future of 1997. Where there's construction robots called Labors. That people use for crime. Thus, Patrol Labors, or Patlabor, the Labor police. Great mech anime, relatively realistic in premise for a mech anime (as in it's semi plausible.) The movies are really really serious, but the OVAs and TV series, despite a few arcs of story, are mostly episodic and almost sitcomlike. No teenage characters, either. Show is from the 80s.

Any of the UC Gundam series. My favorite is Gundam 0080 and the movie Char's Counterattack. For a newer show, Gundam 08th MS Team.

Outlaw Star. Basically the most anime-like anime around. It's sweet.

Wings of Honneamise. Probably my favorite anime movie. It takes place in like an alternate earth type of setting. It's about the first man to go to space.
