It doesn't matter what genre of music, what is the absolute saddest song you have ever heard? My curiosity was sparked by my cousin bursting into tears after hearing "He Stopped Loving her Today" by George Jones in the car the other day.

I once lived in Hollywood, CA. This woman would come by my apartment, sit on the floor and cry crocodile tears as she played this song over and over. Very sad.

I have always liked this sad 1970's song, because I can personally relate to some of its ideas.

The first time I heard this song, I cried. Robby Robertson wrote this to his fellow band mate Richard Manuel after his suicide. They had both been members of 'The Band'. Manuel was a singer, multi-instrumentalist and composer. The video here, while beautiful, for me, detracts from the origin of the song.

"Somewhere My Love" (Lara's Theme), from the movie Doctor Zhivago.

Two star-crossed lovers form a relationship during the Bolshevik Revolution, and circumstances force them apart.

You'd probably have to see the movie and know the lyrics to get the full impact.

The poignancy is heart-wrenching.

the first verse is not so sad, but the second and third verses are.

the third verse is very sad.

down the street you can hear her scream "you're a disgrace"
as she slams the door in his drunken face
and now he stands outside
and all the neighbors start to gossip and drool
he cries "oh, girl you must be mad,
what happened to the sweet love you and me had"?
against the door he leans and starts a scene,
and his tears fall and burn the garden green

and so castles made of sand fall in the sea, eventually

a little Indian brave who before he was ten,
played war games in the woods with his Indian friends
and he built up a dream that when he grew up
he would be a fearless warrior indian chief.
many moons past, and more the dream grew strong until
tomorrow he would sing his first war song and fight his first battle
but something went wrong, surprise attack killed him in his sleep that night

and so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually

there was a young girl, who's heart was a frown
'cause she was crippled for life,
and she couldn't speak a sound
and she wished and prayed she could stop living,
so she decided to die
she drew her wheelchair to the edge of the shore
and to her legs she smiled "you wont hurt me no more"
but then a sight she'd never seen made her jump and say
"look a golden winged ship is passing my way!!"

and it really didn't happen to stop, it just kept on going...

and so castles made of sand slips into the sea, eventually

Eh, Disappear and Vacant are pretty sad songs by Dream Theater. Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day, Lost by Michael Buble and Higher by The Cardigans are all somewhat depressing. Songs that aren't inherently sad but upset me due to the circumstances surrounding the periods I listened to them most, include Gretchen Ross on the Donnie Darko soundtrack and Paranoid Android by Radiohead

It's pretty hard to beat a soft NIN song.

"Angie"by the Rolling Stones is a weepie for me.
Also, the aria "O Dieu te quelle ivresses" from Les Contes d'Hoffmann by Offenbach as sung by Placido Domingo.
I think they have something in common musically that affects my brain. :?:

The part where the soprano enters, at 14:07, about halfway through the first movement, gets me every time!
