Yup! In the US, you only have to go to school through grade 12, and after that comes either college or university, only if you want to enroll. In fact, we always call the action "going to college" even if you're going to a university. I don't know the specifics, but here a university is a more accredited college. But both are basically the same thing to the student in terms of the experience.
A smaller college, or a community college or a 2-year college is the mini-version, less accredited than a regular college. College or university is 4 years on average, but some people take longer to finish their bachelor's degree and others finish it in less than 4. Some go to a community college for 2 years to get the basic credits done for less cost, and then transfer to a university for completion of the degree.
